Database Administrator Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a database administrator in California?
Most database administrator roles in California require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field, though some employers accept an associate degree combined with substantial hands-on experience. California has no state-issued license for database administrators, so the path focuses on vendor certifications such as Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Database Administrator, or AWS Database Specialty, which are widely recognized by California hiring managers across technology, healthcare, and government sectors.
How much do database administrators make in California?
Database administrators in California earn a median of about $113,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,410 for the lowest 10% to over $178,310 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire database administrators in California?
Employers hiring database administrators in California right now include Databricks, Roblox, and Anthropic, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of enterprise technology firms, large healthcare networks, and financial institutions means demand is consistent year-round across both headquarters and regional operations.
Which California cities have the most database administrator jobs?
San Francisco, San Mateo, and Sunnyvale lead California for database administrator openings. The Bay Area drives the largest share due to its density of enterprise software companies and cloud platform headquarters, while Los Angeles hiring is fueled by media, healthcare, and financial services, and San Diego openings are concentrated in biotech, defense contractors, and university health systems.
Are there remote database administrator jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most technical fields. About 23% of database administrator openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves cloud consoles, monitoring dashboards, and scripted maintenance that does not require a physical presence. Database administration tasks that remain on-site tend to be tied to legacy on-premise infrastructure or regulated environments such as healthcare and government.
How can I get hired as a database administrator in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from a database-adjacent role, such as data analyst, systems administrator, or IT support technician, where you already work with structured data or server environments. Large California employers including Kaiser Permanente, UC system campuses, and state government agencies post junior DBA and database support associate roles that explicitly accept candidates without prior DBA titles. Earning an entry-level certification such as Oracle Database Foundations or Microsoft's DP-900 gives a concrete credential that California hiring managers recognize, and building a portfolio of personal or open-source database projects fills the experience gap effectively.
Where can I find and apply to database administrator jobs in California?
