Design Consultant Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a design consultant in Texas?
The clearest path in Texas starts with a bachelor's degree in interior design or architecture from an accredited program, followed by the NCIDQ examination, which is the credential recognized by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners for interior designers. Accumulating supervised work hours before sitting the exam is required, and many Texas firms structure junior roles around that process. Candidates without full licensure often enter through design coordinator or junior consultant positions while building their hours.
Which companies hire design consultants in Texas?
Employers hiring design consultants in Texas right now include Floor and Decor Outlets of America, ExxonMobil, and Bassett Furniture, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of corporate headquarters, major healthcare systems, and large-scale commercial development keeps demand for design consultants steady across both large firms and boutique studios.
Which Texas cities have the most design consultant jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Spring have the most design consultant openings in Texas. Houston's energy sector and medical center drive demand for corporate and healthcare interiors, Dallas anchors a large commercial real estate and retail design market, and Austin's rapid tech-sector growth has fueled a consistent wave of workplace and mixed-use projects that keep design consultant postings active.
Are there remote design consultant jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because much of the role involves site visits, client walkthroughs, and physical material selection. About 7% of design consultant openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in the programming, space planning, and specification phases of projects rather than construction administration.
How can I get hired as a design consultant in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an internship or junior design associate role at a mid-size Texas commercial firm, where NCIDQ candidacy and a strong portfolio carry more weight than years of experience. Firms like HKS and Gensler run structured internship programs from their Dallas and Houston offices, and many Texas healthcare systems hire design coordinators who work alongside senior consultants. Transitioning from an adjacent role in project management, architecture, or visual merchandising is also a recognized route into the field.
Where can I find and apply to design consultant jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to design consultant jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Texas employers and updates regularly. Search the available roles, find positions that match your background and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
