Design Engineer Jobs in Mississippi: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a design engineer in Mississippi?
You become a design engineer in Mississippi by earning an accredited engineering degree, then pursuing registration through the Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Most employers expect candidates to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and work as an Engineer in Training before sitting for the Professional Engineer exam. Mississippi employers in shipbuilding, aerospace, and manufacturing commonly hire new graduates into supervised engineering roles that build toward full licensure.
Which companies hire design engineers in Mississippi?
Companies currently hiring design engineers in Mississippi include Eaton, Boeing, and Thunderbird, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Mississippi's defense shipbuilding industry, anchored along the Gulf Coast, and its automotive and aerospace manufacturing sector in the northeast consistently produce the most sustained demand for design engineering talent.
Which Mississippi cities have the most design engineer jobs?
Gulfport, Jackson, and New Albany account for the most design engineer openings in Mississippi. The Gulf Coast concentration reflects Ingalls Shipbuilding and defense contractors in Pascagoula, while the Jackson metro supports state agency infrastructure work and manufacturing supply chains, and the Toyota plant and related suppliers drive demand in the northeast corridor around Blue Springs and Itawamba County.
Are there remote design engineer jobs in Mississippi?
Yes, but they're rare. Design engineering work is heavily hands-on, tied to production floors, shipyards, or construction sites, so most roles require a physical presence. About 0% of design engineer openings tied to Mississippi are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, making fully remote positions uncommon. The portions of the role most likely to allow remote work are specification writing, CAD modeling reviews, and design documentation tasks.
How can I get hired as a design engineer in Mississippi with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for graduate or junior engineer roles at large Mississippi manufacturers and defense contractors, which regularly bring on candidates straight from accredited programs. Ingalls Shipbuilding runs structured new-graduate engineering programs, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi hires associate engineers for product and process design support. Completing your EIT registration through the Mississippi Board of Licensure strengthens any application, and a portfolio of capstone or internship projects that shows applied CAD and analysis work gives candidates a concrete edge over those with coursework alone.
Where can I find and apply to design engineer jobs in Mississippi?
You can find and apply to design engineer jobs in Mississippi on Migrate Mate, which lists current Mississippi openings across industries including shipbuilding, automotive, aerospace, and infrastructure. Search the listings, identify the roles that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that match your experience.
