Design Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a design engineer in New York?
Most design engineer roles in New York require a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, civil, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who work on public projects or offer services to the public may need a Professional Engineer license, obtained through the New York State Education Department, which requires passing the Fundamentals of Engineering and Principles and Practice of Engineering exams. For private-sector product or systems roles, no state license is required, and employers focus on degree, CAD proficiency, and internship or co-op experience.
Which companies hire design engineers in New York?
Employers hiring design engineers in New York right now include Colliers Engineering & Design, Popli Design, and Anthropic, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's combination of defense contractors on Long Island, semiconductor and technology firms in the Hudson Valley, and large infrastructure and transit agencies in New York City makes it one of the more varied engineering markets in the country.
Which New York cities have the most design engineer jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Buffalo have the most design engineer openings in New York. New York City drives volume through its transit, construction, and technology sectors, Long Island is anchored by aerospace and defense employers concentrated around the Island's research and manufacturing corridor, and Rochester draws on a deep legacy in optics, photonics, and precision manufacturing tied to companies and institutions that have long defined the region's industrial base.
Are there remote design engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're limited. Design engineering work often requires access to physical prototypes, lab equipment, CAD workstations, and on-site collaboration with manufacturing or construction teams, which keeps most roles on-site or hybrid. About 13% of design engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The portions of the role most compatible with remote work include design review, documentation, simulation, and CAD modeling tasks that don't require hands-on lab access.
How can I get hired as a design engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an associate or junior design engineer role at a mid-size manufacturer or engineering consultancy, where a strong senior design project, internship, or co-op experience carries real weight. Large New York employers in aerospace, transit, and semiconductor manufacturing regularly bring on new graduates through structured rotational or associate engineer programs. Building a portfolio of CAD models, design calculations, or capstone project documentation is a practical differentiator, and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early signals commitment in fields where Professional Engineer licensure matters.
Where can I find and apply to design engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to design engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find ones that match your background and target location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
