Development Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a development engineer in New York?
Most development engineer roles in New York require a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, or materials engineering. New York does not mandate a state-issued Professional Engineer license for most private-sector development engineering roles, though a PE credential from the New York State Education Department strengthens candidacy for senior or client-facing positions. Employers in regulated sectors like aerospace and pharmaceuticals often expect demonstrated project experience alongside the degree.
How much do development engineers make in New York?
Development engineers in New York earn a median of about $129,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $81,520 for the lowest 10% to over $146,180 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire development engineers in New York?
Employers hiring development engineers in New York right now include Amazon, Amazon Web Services, and CVS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's deep concentration of aerospace, life sciences, and semiconductor firms means demand stays active even outside traditional tech hiring cycles.
Which New York cities have the most development engineer jobs?
New York, Albany, and Rochester account for the largest share of development engineer openings in New York. New York City anchors demand through its pharmaceutical, financial technology, and advanced manufacturing sectors, while Long Island draws heavily from aerospace and defense contractors, and the Capital Region benefits from IBM's presence and the growing semiconductor corridor tied to GlobalFoundries.
Are there remote development engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Development engineering typically involves hands-on lab work, prototype testing, or manufacturing floor collaboration that requires on-site presence. About 22% of development engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to concentrate in software-adjacent or systems engineering functions where design reviews and documentation can be handled off-site.
How can I get hired as a development engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a co-op or internship that converts to a full-time offer, and large New York employers including Lockheed Martin and Pfizer run structured new-graduate programs specifically designed for candidates without professional experience. Roles such as test engineer, quality engineer, or manufacturing engineer associate are common lateral entries. A capstone project portfolio, EIT designation from the New York State Education Department, or coursework in industry-specific tools like SolidWorks strengthens an early-career application considerably.
Where can I find and apply to development engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to development engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York City, Long Island, the Capital Region, and other hiring markets throughout the state. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly.
