- Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, or NX for design and modeling
- Experience with product development processes including DFMEA, DFM, and design validation testing
- Familiarity with GD&T, tolerance analysis, and engineering drawing standards
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, lab testing, and iterative design cycles
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills working with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams
Tips for Your Development Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to each discipline
Development engineer roles in automotive lean on CAD, tolerancing, and DFMEA, while those in consumer electronics emphasize rapid prototyping and DFM. Pull the exact tools and methodologies from each job posting and match them in your resume's skills section and bullet points.
Quantify your prototype and test outcomes
Hiring managers want to see what you built and whether it worked. Replace vague statements with concrete outcomes: cycle time reduced, defect rate cut, prototype iterations completed on schedule. Numbers tied to real development milestones make your work legible to both engineers and recruiters.
Filter openings by product lifecycle stage
Early-stage development roles demand comfort with ambiguity and design iteration, while sustaining engineering roles prioritize process control and supplier management. Knowing which stage interests you most helps you target postings where your current experience is the actual fit, not just a near-miss.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists development engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a technical design review
Many development engineer interviews include a whiteboard or take-home exercise where you walk through a product decision or failure analysis. Practice explaining your constraint trade-offs out loud, covering material selection, manufacturing feasibility, and cost alongside performance so your reasoning is clear under pressure.
Negotiate using total compensation framing
Development engineer offers vary by sector in ways that go beyond base salary: hardware-heavy industries often include signing bonuses tied to relocation, while software-adjacent roles bundle equity or profit-sharing. Ask for a written total compensation breakdown before comparing offers so you're evaluating equivalent terms.
Development Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most development engineers?
The companies hiring the most development engineers right now include Amazon, BKF Engineers, and CVS Health, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Washington, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is particularly concentrated in automotive, aerospace, and consumer hardware sectors.
How many development engineer jobs are remote?
About 26% of development engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than many engineering disciplines because hands-on lab and prototyping work is central to most roles. Software-adjacent specializations such as embedded systems firmware development and simulation-heavy roles tend to have the highest share of remote flexibility.
How do you become a development engineer?
Most development engineers start with a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering, then build hands-on experience through internships, co-ops, or entry-level roles in product or process development. From there, deepening expertise in a specific industry, earning proficiency in standard CAD and analysis tools, and demonstrating ownership of a full development cycle from concept through validation is what moves candidates into mid-level and senior positions.
Can you get hired as a development engineer with little experience?
Yes, entry-level development engineer roles exist specifically for candidates early in their careers, and employers in this space weigh practical project work heavily alongside formal experience. A strong senior capstone project, documented internship deliverables, or independent hardware or software builds that show you can move from problem to prototype to tested result will make your application competitive even without years of full-time history.
What does the development engineer interview process look like?
Most development engineer interview processes include a recruiter screen, a technical phone or video interview focused on engineering fundamentals and past project experience, and a final round that often involves a panel of engineers and a design exercise or case study. The case study typically asks you to walk through a product decision, analyze a failure, or propose a design solution, and interviewers are evaluating your reasoning process as much as your final answer.
Where can I find and apply to development engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to development engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level, industry, and specialization, then apply directly to each one that fits.
