How do I get a development engineer job in San Francisco?
Targeting San Francisco's biotech corridor in Mission Bay, the hardware and semiconductor firms in SoMa, and the clean energy companies expanding across the Bay Area gives you the sharpest focus. Employers here favor candidates with hands-on product development cycles, cross-functional lab or prototyping experience, and familiarity with the fast iteration pace common in San Francisco's technology and life sciences sectors. A portfolio of shipped or tested work stands out more than credentials alone.
Which companies hire development engineers in San Francisco?

The local market features a mix of established medical device and biotech firms, early-stage hardware startups, and large enterprise technology companies with engineering campuses in and around the city.
Are there remote development engineer jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though remote availability depends heavily on the role, since hands-on prototyping, lab work, and hardware testing typically require an on-site presence. About 32% of development engineer openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common in software-facing or systems integration roles where design and documentation work can be done off-site.
How can I get a development engineer job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Francisco is through associate or junior development engineer roles at biotech and medical device companies in Mission Bay, many of which run structured rotational programs for recent graduates. Gaining experience with CAD tools, lab instrumentation, or product testing protocols, and connecting with engineering teams through local university career fairs at UCSF or UC Berkeley, gives candidates a concrete edge in this market.
