Industrial Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an industrial engineer in California?
Most industrial engineer positions in California require a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited program. Licensure as a Professional Engineer through the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists is not mandatory for most private-sector roles but strengthens candidacy for senior positions. Many California employers also expect familiarity with lean principles and relevant software tools from the start.
How much do industrial engineers make in California?
Industrial engineers in California earn a median of about $124,600 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,900 for the lowest 10% to over $172,870 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire industrial engineers in California?
Employers hiring industrial engineers in California right now include Northrop Grumman, Tesla, and Anduril, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's aerospace, semiconductor, and medical device industries generate especially consistent demand, with large integrated facilities driving ongoing needs for process and systems engineers.
Which California cities have the most industrial engineer jobs?
Fremont, San Jose, and Palo Alto have the most industrial engineer openings in California right now. Los Angeles anchors demand through its aerospace and defense manufacturing base, San Jose reflects Silicon Valley's semiconductor and electronics industries, and San Diego draws heavily from defense contractors and the growing life sciences sector.
Are there remote industrial engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Industrial engineering work is largely hands-on, tied to factory floors, production lines, and physical facilities, which limits remote options compared to purely analytical fields. About 13% of industrial engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those postings typically cover analytical, planning, or systems-design functions that don't require daily on-site presence.
How can I get hired as an industrial engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a co-op or internship during your engineering program, which many California aerospace and tech manufacturers use as a direct pipeline into full-time roles. Look for new-grad associate engineer and junior process engineer postings at companies with large California operations in defense, semiconductors, and logistics. Earning a Lean Six Sigma Yellow or Green Belt certification and building a portfolio of process improvement projects, even from coursework, meaningfully strengthens applications for candidates without paid experience.
Where can I find and apply to industrial engineer jobs in California?
