Design Engineer Jobs in Pittsburgh, PA

We’re hiring a Hardware Design Electrical Engineer to develop connected electronics for demanding industrial applications. You’ll take ownership of PCB design and microcontroller integration, partnering with firmware, mechanical, thermal, and optical engineers to move products from early concept into full production.

Your work will focus on embedded systems, CAN bus, RTOS, wireless connectivity, and IoT, supporting products used in industrial automation.

Responsibilities

• Design electronics engineered to perform reliably in harsh, industrial-grade environments
• Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, thermal, and optical teams during new product development
• Implement CAN bus and SAE J1939 communication protocols while meeting mechanical and thermal requirements
• Prepare technical specifications and proposals that support scalable, cost-conscious designs
• Develop proof-of-concept prototypes and contribute to DFMEA documentation
• Create and execute validation test plans, including alpha and beta phases and DVP&R stress testing
• Optimize designs for manufacturability and for integration into larger systems
• Author technical documentation and internal white papers to share knowledge across the team
• Manage design revisions and version control across the full product lifecycle

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in circuit and hardware design
• Proficiency with Altium or a similar CAD tool for schematic capture and PCB layout
• Background in embedded systems (RTOS or Linux) and coding experience in C, C++, or Python
• Strong working knowledge of CAN bus and SAE J1939
• Familiarity with GHz-class microprocessors and wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and cellular
• Hands-on lab experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related equipment
• Practical knowledge of PCB fabrication and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) principles
• Understanding of device-to-cloud embedded system architecture

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (required)
• Master’s degree or graduate coursework (preferred)

This is an on-site role in the Pittsburgh PA area.

Pay: $85,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
