Structural Designer Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a structural designer in Pennsylvania?
The standard path begins with a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, followed by gaining supervised experience and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam administered through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Pennsylvania licensure as a Professional Engineer, issued by the State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, is required to stamp and seal structural drawings. Many firms hire engineering graduates into designer roles while they accumulate the experience hours needed for full PE licensure.
How much do structural designers make in Pennsylvania?
Structural designers in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $97,850 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,930 for the lowest 10% to over $141,310 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire structural designers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring structural designers in Pennsylvania right now include Hunt-eas, GHD, and Hatch, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of civil infrastructure firms, regional engineering consultancies, and large transportation agencies makes it a consistent source of structural design openings across both urban centers and suburban corridors.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most structural designer jobs?
Towanda, Pittsburgh, and Bensalem have the most structural designer openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia's volume of transit, commercial, and institutional construction drives the largest concentration, Pittsburgh's ongoing infrastructure investment and university-adjacent development sustain steady demand, and Allentown's industrial and logistics expansion has increased hiring from engineering firms serving the Lehigh Valley market.
Are there remote structural designer jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're limited. Structural design involves site coordination, document review, and construction observation that routinely requires in-person presence. About 50% of structural designer openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of much of the work. Tasks most likely to be done remotely include preliminary analysis, drafting, and model development, while field visits and client meetings typically require presence.
How can I get hired as a structural designer in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to engineering graduate programs or junior designer roles at mid-size Pennsylvania firms such as regional transportation consultancies and municipal engineering practices, which regularly hire new graduates alongside established staff. Building a portfolio of academic or personal structural projects, earning your EIT designation early, and targeting firms with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation contracts gives candidates a concrete edge. Lateral moves from architectural drafting or CAD technician roles are also a recognized route into structural design work.
