Tips for Your Structural Designer Job Search
Tailor your resume to each discipline
Civil firms want to see foundation and framing experience, while facade or curtain wall shops look for envelope detailing. Swap out your project list for each application so the most relevant structural work sits at the top, not buried mid-page.
Show software proficiency with version numbers
Hiring managers scan for Tekla, Revit, RISA, or STAAD fluency, and they notice when candidates leave versions vague. Listing the specific release you used most recently signals that you won't need ramp-up time on day one.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists structural designer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by project delivery method
Design-build firms want designers who can collaborate directly with contractors and tolerate scope changes mid-project. Traditional DBB firms expect strict document control and change-order discipline. Targeting the delivery method you know best shortens your ramp-up and makes you a stronger candidate.
Prepare a project sheet, not just a resume
Structural design interviews almost always include a walkthrough of past work. A one-page project sheet listing the building type, your specific scope, the software used, and how loads were resolved gives you a concrete reference point and keeps technical answers focused.
Negotiate title and scope, not just compensation
At smaller firms, a senior structural designer title may come with full project ownership and client contact from day one. Clarify what design authority and review responsibilities come with the role before accepting, because those factors shape your career trajectory more than starting pay.
Structural Designer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most structural designers?
The companies hiring the most structural designers right now include HDR, Kiewit, and Kimley-Horn, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Florida, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand tends to be highest at multidisciplinary engineering and architecture firms with active commercial, industrial, or infrastructure portfolios.
How many structural designer jobs are remote?
About 19% of structural designer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than the broader design and engineering average given the coordination-heavy nature of the role. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote arrangements are BIM detailing, connection design review, and documentation work that doesn't require on-site visits.
How do you become a structural designer?
Most structural designers start with a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, then gain hands-on experience producing structural drawings and models at an engineering or architecture firm. Building fluency in BIM software like Tekla or Revit is essential early on. Many move into a designer title after two to four years of drafting and detailing work, then progress by taking on full project scope and pursuing EIT or PE credentials.
Can I get a structural designer job with little experience?
Entry-level structural designer roles do exist, typically titled junior designer or structural drafter, and firms filling them prioritize software skills over years of experience. A strong portfolio of school projects, capstone work, or freelance detailing jobs can substitute for paid experience. Focusing on firms with established training programs or mentorship structures gives early-career candidates the fastest path to full project responsibility.
What does the structural designer interview process look like?
Most structural designer interviews follow three stages: an initial screen with a recruiter or HR contact to confirm background and software experience, a technical interview with a senior engineer or project manager that walks through past project work and design decisions, and sometimes a short take-home exercise involving load calculations or a detailing problem. Final-round interviews at larger firms may include a meeting with the project team or a discipline lead.
Where can I find and apply to structural designer jobs?
You can find and apply to structural designer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find the roles that match your experience, specialization, and preferred location, then apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
