Structural Designer Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a structural designer job in Houston?
Focus your search on Houston's Energy Corridor and Greenway Plaza, where engineering and construction firms concentrate. Oil and gas operators, EPC contractors, and petrochemical facility owners drive the bulk of local hiring. Candidates with experience in industrial or heavy civil projects, proficiency in STAAD.Pro or RAM Structural System, and familiarity with ASCE 7 load requirements stand out in this market.
Which companies hire structural designers in Houston?
Companies currently hiring structural designers in Houston include Primoris Pipeline, Hatch, and ARCXIS, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's hiring is concentrated among large EPC firms, specialty structural engineering consultancies, and industrial facility owners tied to the energy and refining sectors.
Are there remote structural designer jobs in Houston?
Yes, though structural designer work is less remote-friendly than purely analytical roles because site coordination and drawing reviews often require in-person collaboration. About 0% of structural designer openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common for design-heavy phases of projects. Roles focused on modeling, calculations, and documentation tend to offer the most schedule flexibility.
How can I get a structural designer job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is targeting junior designer or drafter roles at mid-size EPC firms and structural consulting practices that support the energy sector. Many Houston employers hire candidates with an engineering technology degree or CAD training for entry-level design support positions. Building a portfolio of coursework projects in industrial or commercial structures and earning your EIT credential early strengthens your application considerably in this market.
Which industries hire the most structural designers in Houston?
Houston structural designer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Manufacturing, and Technology & Software, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's standing as a global energy hub means upstream oil and gas, petrochemical processing, and heavy industrial construction consistently generate more structural design work here than in most other U.S. cities.
