Development Director Jobs in Richmond: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a development director job in Richmond?
The strongest path in Richmond runs through its dense nonprofit sector, anchored by healthcare foundations, arts organizations, and social services agencies concentrated downtown and in the Fan District. Candidates with a portfolio of major gift campaigns, grant writing wins, or capital campaign experience stand out. Building relationships with Richmond's active Association of Fundraising Professionals chapter gives you a real edge over out-of-market applicants.
Which companies hire development directors in Richmond?
Companies currently hiring development directors in Richmond include YMCA, Capital One, and Oshkosh Defense, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Richmond's employer mix skews heavily toward mission-driven institutions, including health systems, universities, and established nonprofits that run ongoing development operations year-round.
Are there remote development director jobs in Richmond?
Yes, though development director roles lean toward in-person work given the donor relationship and event responsibilities involved. About 60% of development director openings tied to Richmond are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, which reflects a market where hybrid scheduling is increasingly common but full remote remains the exception. Grant writing and data-driven fundraising planning are the functions most likely to be done off-site.
How can I get a development director job in Richmond with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point in Richmond is a development associate or grants coordinator role at one of the city's smaller nonprofits or community foundations, where team sizes are lean and advancement is quicker. Organizations in health services and arts and culture frequently hire junior development staff who grow into director positions within a few years. Volunteering on fundraising committees for Richmond civic groups also builds the local donor network that hiring managers look for.
Which industries hire the most development directors in Richmond?
Most development director openings in Richmond sit in Construction & Real Estate and Healthcare & Medical Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Richmond's role as a regional healthcare hub and home to several private universities drives sustained demand, while the city's robust independent nonprofit community adds a steady layer of fundraising leadership openings throughout the year.
