DevOps Engineer Jobs in Alaska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a devops engineer in Alaska?
Becoming a devops engineer in Alaska does not require a state-issued license or registration. Most employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field, though candidates with an associate degree plus substantial hands-on experience are regularly considered. Earning vendor certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Certified Kubernetes Administrator strengthens your application considerably, particularly with Alaska's defense contractors and state agencies.
Which companies hire devops engineers in Alaska?
Employers hiring devops engineers in Alaska right now include Goldbelt, Ryder System, and Southcentral Foundation, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alaska's oil and gas sector, federal defense contracts, and state government IT modernization projects are the most consistent sources of devops engineering demand across the state.
Which Alaska cities have the most devops engineer jobs?
The cities with the most devops engineer openings in Alaska are Juneau, Anchorage, and Alaska. Anchorage drives the majority of listings as the state's commercial and government hub, home to the largest concentration of energy companies, federal agencies, and private technology firms, while Fairbanks benefits from University of Alaska and military installations at Fort Wainwright.
Are there remote devops engineer jobs in Alaska?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 20% of devops engineer openings tied to Alaska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how well infrastructure, automation, and platform work translates to distributed teams. Cloud operations and pipeline development roles are the most likely to be fully remote, while positions tied to on-premises government or defense systems typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a devops engineer in Alaska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a junior systems administrator or IT operations role at one of Alaska's state agencies or university campuses, where internal mobility into devops teams is common. The University of Alaska system and the Alaska Department of Administration regularly hire IT support staff who can grow into infrastructure roles. Building a portfolio with personal projects using Terraform or Docker and earning an entry-level AWS certification gives candidates a concrete edge when lateral opportunities open.
