Tips for Your DevOps Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to each stack
Recruiters scan for specific tools like Kubernetes, Terraform, and Ansible before reading anything else. Mirror the exact tool names from each job posting in your resume's skills and experience sections so automated screening doesn't filter you out before a human sees it.
Quantify infrastructure impact not just tasks
Instead of listing what you managed, describe what changed because you managed it. Deployment frequency, incident reduction, and cost savings from right-sizing cloud resources are the numbers that make a devops engineer resume stand out from candidates who list duties without outcomes.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists devops engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by certification requirements upfront
Many cloud-heavy roles require an AWS Solutions Architect, Google Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, or CKA before an interview is even offered. Identify which certifications appear most in your target listings and prioritize those gaps before applying, rather than after you get screened out.
Prepare for a hands-on technical screen
Most devops engineer interviews include a live or take-home infrastructure challenge, not just whiteboard questions. Practice writing Terraform modules from scratch, debugging broken Helm charts, or tracing a failed pipeline in a realistic environment so you're not solving these cold during the interview.
Negotiate total compensation across all components
Cloud platform stipends, home-lab reimbursements, and conference budgets are common in devops engineer offers and are frequently negotiable even when base pay isn't. Ask specifically about these benefits during the offer stage, since many hiring managers expect the question and have flexibility reserved for it.
DevOps Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most devops engineers?
The companies hiring the most devops engineers right now include Google, Amazon, and Booz Allen Hamilton, with the largest share of openings in California, Virginia, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially concentrated at cloud-native companies, financial institutions modernizing legacy infrastructure, and large healthcare organizations scaling digital platforms.
How many devops engineer jobs are remote?
About 37% of devops engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more location-flexible engineering roles available. Cloud infrastructure, SRE, and platform engineering sub-specializations tend to have the highest share of fully remote positions since the work is inherently tool-driven and does not require physical presence.
How do you become a devops engineer?
Start by building a solid foundation in Linux administration, networking basics, and at least one scripting language like Python or Bash. From there, learn a major cloud platform, practice containerization with Docker and Kubernetes, and get comfortable with CI/CD tools by building personal pipelines in public repositories. Earning a cloud or Kubernetes certification helps validate those skills to employers who screen on credentials before interviewing.
Can you get hired as a devops engineer with little experience?
Yes, junior and associate devops engineer roles exist and often prioritize demonstrated hands-on ability over years of experience. Building a public GitHub portfolio with working Terraform configurations, Dockerized applications, and documented CI/CD pipelines shows employers practical competence. Contributing to open-source infrastructure projects or completing cloud certifications also signals readiness when your professional history is limited.
What does the devops engineer interview process look like?
Most devops engineer hiring processes start with a recruiter or hiring manager screen covering your background and tool experience, followed by a technical phone interview focused on infrastructure concepts and troubleshooting scenarios. A take-home or live coding challenge involving pipeline setup, Kubernetes debugging, or Terraform writing is common next. Final rounds typically include a system design discussion and a conversation with the engineering team about on-call practices and incident response philosophy.
Where can I find and apply to devops engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to devops engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, cloud platform expertise, and preferred work arrangement, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
