Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as an Oil And Gas
Verify your degree matches the role
The E-3 requires a specialty occupation, so your engineering or geoscience degree must align with the specific job duties. A petroleum engineer role supported by a chemical engineering degree is defensible; a general science degree for a reservoir modeling position often isn't.
Target operators over oilfield service companies
Integrated operators and independent E&P companies typically have in-house HR teams familiar with E-3 sponsorship. Oilfield service contractors often route hiring through staffing firms that lack LCA filing experience, which slows the process and increases denial risk.
Search for E-3 sponsorship roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you land an offer. Migrate Mate's platform surfaces oil and gas roles where employers are already open to E-3 sponsorship, cutting the time you spend educating reluctant HR teams.
Request the LCA before your start date
Your employer must file the Labor Condition Application with DOL and receive certification before your consulate appointment. LCA certification typically takes seven business days, but delays occur, so confirm your employer has submitted it well before your scheduled interview.
Use rotational or project roles to enter the market
Many Australian petroleum engineers enter U.S. operations through defined-duration project assignments, then convert to permanent E-3 status with the same employer. These roles are easier to negotiate because the employer's financial commitment is bounded from the outset.
Clarify your FIFO history when applying
Australian oil and gas professionals with fly-in fly-out experience are sometimes asked by consular officers about prior U.S. work without proper authorization. Document any short-term business visitor travel accurately on your DS-160 to avoid complications during the E-3 interview.

Find Oil And Gas JobsOil And Gas E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find oil and gas jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals seeking E-3 sponsorship, with oil and gas roles filtered by employers open to the visa. Standard job boards don't distinguish between H-1B and E-3 sponsorship willingness, so you'll spend significant time on roles where the employer has no process for Australian nationals.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for oil and gas professionals?
The H-1B has an annual cap of 85,000 slots and requires lottery selection, meaning you could be qualified and still not get a visa number in a given year. The E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap, so every qualified Australian petroleum engineer or geoscientist who secures a job offer and meets the specialty occupation standard can get the visa.
Do offshore or rotational oil and gas roles qualify for the E-3 visa?
Yes, provided the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and the employer is a U.S. entity that can file the Labor Condition Application with DOL. Offshore positions on U.S. outer continental shelf platforms generally fall under U.S. jurisdiction, so the employer can sponsor an E-3 for those roles.
Can I change oil and gas employers while on an E-3?
Yes, but you can't begin work with the new employer until they've obtained a certified LCA from DOL and you've either obtained a new E-3 visa stamp or, if already in the United States, have confirmed the new employer's authorization to employ you. There's no portability rule like AC21 for H-1B holders, so the new filing must be complete before you start.
