Education Counselor Jobs in Alaska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a education counselor in Alaska?
To work as a school-based education counselor in Alaska, you need a Professional Teaching Certificate with a School Counselor endorsement, issued by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. That requires a master's degree in school counseling and a completed practicum. Candidates apply through the department's certification portal and must pass a background check. For counseling roles in higher education or social services, employer requirements vary but typically center on a master's in counseling and relevant supervised experience.
Which companies hire education counselors in Alaska?
Alaska education counselor roles are posted by Providence, US Department of Veterans Affairs, and Leidos and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Many of the most consistent openings come from large school districts and the University of Alaska system, which hire across multiple campuses and service regions throughout the year.
Which Alaska cities have the most education counselor jobs?
Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Alaska account for the largest share of education counselor openings in Alaska. Anchorage drives volume as the state's largest city and home to its biggest school district and university campus, while Fairbanks and Juneau generate consistent demand through the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the concentration of state government and education agencies headquartered in the capital.
Are there remote education counselor jobs in Alaska?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since much of the work involves in-person student contact. About 5% of education counselor openings tied to Alaska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to focus on virtual college advising, career coaching, or administrative coordination roles rather than direct school-based counseling.
How can I get hired as a education counselor in Alaska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a paraprofessional or student services aide role inside an Alaska school district while completing your master's and supervised practicum hours. The Anchorage School District and Fairbanks North Star Borough School District both regularly hire practicum students and new-grad counselors into associate or temporary positions. Adjacent roles like academic advisor, case manager, or school social work assistant give transferable experience that Alaska hiring managers recognize. Completing your Alaska Department of Education School Counselor endorsement, even provisionally, gives you a clear credential advantage in the applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to education counselor jobs in Alaska?
You can find and apply to education counselor jobs in Alaska on Migrate Mate, which lists current Alaska openings across school districts, universities, and state agencies. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
