Research Assistant Professor Jobs in Alaska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research assistant professor in Alaska?
A doctoral degree in your field is the baseline requirement for a research assistant professor position in Alaska. The University of Alaska system, which includes campuses in Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Southeast, fills most of these roles and expects an active publication or grant record. Unlike clinical professions, no state-issued license governs the position, but faculty appointments go through the Board of Regents approval process, and positions tied to Arctic or environmental research often require demonstrated field experience in Alaska or comparable remote environments.
Which companies hire research assistant professors in Alaska?
Employers hiring research assistant professors in Alaska right now include University of Alaska and Chamberlain University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alaska's federal research presence, including agencies focused on Arctic science and natural resources, also generates openings alongside the university system.
Which Alaska cities have the most research assistant professor jobs?
Fairbanks and Anchorage account for the largest share of research assistant professor openings in Alaska. Fairbanks leads because the University of Alaska Fairbanks is the state's flagship research institution with strong programs in geophysics, permafrost science, and space physics, while Anchorage draws positions tied to health research, Indigenous studies, and state agency partnerships.
Are there remote research assistant professor jobs in Alaska?
Yes, but they're relatively rare. About 25% of research assistant professor openings tied to Alaska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, which is lower than purely desk-based fields because many positions involve lab work, student mentorship, or fieldwork in Alaska's backcountry. Roles focused on data analysis, computational modeling, or policy research are the most likely to offer remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a research assistant professor in Alaska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a postdoctoral fellowship, and the University of Alaska system posts these regularly across its Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Southeast campuses. Postdocs in Arctic ecology, Indigenous health, or geosciences frequently convert to research assistant professor appointments when grant funding allows. Candidates without postdoc experience can strengthen their position by securing even a small external grant, co-authoring with established Alaska faculty, or moving laterally from a research scientist or project coordinator role at agencies such as the Alaska Department of Fish and Game or NOAA's Alaska Fisheries Science Center.
Where can I find and apply to research assistant professor jobs in Alaska?
You can find and apply to research assistant professor jobs in Alaska on Migrate Mate, which lists current Alaska openings in one place. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to each one.
