Education Counselor Jobs in Rhode Island: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a education counselor in Rhode Island?
To become a school counselor in Rhode Island you must earn a master's degree in school counseling and obtain a School Counselor certificate through the Rhode Island Department of Education. The process requires completing an approved graduate program, supervised practicum hours, and passing the Praxis School Counselor exam. For counseling roles in higher education or nonprofits, state licensure is not required, but a master's degree and relevant advising experience are standard expectations among Rhode Island employers.
Which companies hire education counselors in Rhode Island?
Companies currently hiring education counselors in Rhode Island include LifeStance Health, Brown University Health, and Behavioral Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Rhode Island's relatively compact size means large public school districts, community colleges, and nonprofit workforce development organizations account for the majority of consistent openings across the state.
Which Rhode Island cities have the most education counselor jobs?
Providence, East Greenwich, and South Kingstown are the cities with the most education counselor openings in Rhode Island. Providence drives the largest share of demand as the state capital and home to its largest school district, several colleges, and a concentration of nonprofit social service agencies, while Cranston and Woonsocket reflect strong suburban district hiring and community-based program growth in those corridors.
Are there remote education counselor jobs in Rhode Island?
Yes, but they're relatively limited. About 79% of education counselor openings tied to Rhode Island are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the reality that most counseling roles require in-person student interaction. The roles most likely to offer remote flexibility are virtual academic advising positions at online program providers and some college access nonprofit roles that operate across multiple sites.
How can I get hired as a education counselor in Rhode Island with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a graduate practicum or internship placement within a Rhode Island school district or college advising office, which many programs arrange directly with sites like Providence Public Schools or Rhode Island College. Adjacent roles such as academic advisor, student services coordinator, or case manager at a workforce development nonprofit are common entry points. Earning the Rhode Island School Counselor certificate early, even before your first full-time position, gives candidates a measurable edge in K-12 hiring cycles.
