Education Counselor Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a education counselor in Texas?
To work as a school counselor in Texas public K-12 settings, you must hold a School Counselor certificate issued by the Texas Education Agency, which requires a master's degree in counseling and a passing score on the TExES School Counselor exam. For college advising or nonprofit roles, a master's in counseling or a related field is the standard hiring threshold, though TEA certification is not always required outside public school districts.
Which companies hire education counselors in Texas?
Employers hiring education counselors in Texas right now include University of North Texas, Sam Houston State University, and IDEA Public Schools, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large independent school districts, community college networks, and college access nonprofits are among the most consistent sources of openings in the state.
Which Texas cities have the most education counselor jobs?
Denton, Huntsville, and Brownsville have the most education counselor openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth lead because of their massive independent school districts and large university systems, while Austin's concentration of higher education institutions and education-focused nonprofits drives strong demand there as well.
Are there remote education counselor jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in many fields, since most education counselor roles involve direct, in-person contact with students. About 0% of education counselor openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with virtual options most likely in college access coaching, online program advising, and ed-tech or nonprofit roles where counseling is delivered digitally.
How can I get hired as a education counselor in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a graduate practicum or internship placement, which Texas master's programs in counseling require and which frequently converts to a full-time hire at the host district or institution. Large Texas school districts and community colleges such as Dallas College and Houston Community College regularly bring on graduate interns and new-grad counselors. Candidates who lack direct counseling hours often move in from adjacent roles like academic advisor, college access coach, or student services coordinator, and holding or actively pursuing TEA School Counselor certification gives any early-career applicant a clear competitive edge.
Where can I find and apply to education counselor jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to education counselor jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Find the roles that fit your experience and preferred location, then apply directly through the listings.
