INTRODUCTION
This role will be based onsite at our Charles City, IA manufacturing site. Remote and/or hybrid candidates will not be considered.
The EHS Specialist will partner with the EHS team to assist in the management and oversight of EHS programs at the site. This position supports day-to-day operations of all functions and groups on site. The primary emphasis of the position is performing functions that ensure the highest standards of environmental, health, and safety performance in compliance with all applicable local, State, Federal Regulations and Zoetis Corporate Standards. Assists in the development and implementation of plant safety and environmental initiatives driving continuous improvement efforts.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provides guidance, training, and operational support to all levels of the organization and across all functional groups. Provides day-to-day program oversight and compliance with site, corporate and regulatory requirements. Serves as an expert environmental, health, and safety resource to the site.
- Supports and leads EHS improvement projects. Partners with key subject matter experts to perform EHS risk assessments, self-assessments, internal audits, loss prevention assessments and regulatory inspections.
- Assists people leaders in the performance of incident investigations and root cause analyses related to EHS-related incidents. Partners with people leaders and EHS team to identify root cause and develop corrective actions to prevent further incidents.
- Analyzes and prepares documentation, presentations, and reports for internal and external stakeholders. Maintains permit recordkeeping and reporting requirements. Maintains compliance tracker and assures timely submission of required reports.
- Applies standardized safety and industrial hygiene concepts to monitor and evaluate potential workplace exposure hazards and recommends appropriate controls. Participates in process hazard analysis, design reviews, change control and product transfer teams.
- Partners with EHS team to manage EHS programs related to air emissions, waste management and water to include but not limited to SPCC, SARA, TRI, and refrigerant management. Develops effective and efficient manufacturing, laboratory, and facility environmental/safety compliance programs.
- Facilitates and/or participates on various site committees and teams, such as site safety, sustainability, and spill/emergency response. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to improve the operations at the site.
Education and Experience:
A bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, environmental, health and safety or other related technical field required.
- Associate Level: BA/BS with 0-2 years of professional experience in EHS.
- Specialist Level: BA/BS with 2-4 years of professional experience in EHS.
- Manager Level: BA/BS with 6-10 years of professional experience in EHS or a MS/MPH with 2-4 years of professional experience in EHS.
- Technical knowledge and ability to solve practical environmental, worker health and safety problems by implementing practical mitigating actions.
- Ability to recognize and identify complex EHS technical problems, analyze effectively and work in teams to solve.
- Fluent in English with excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Relevant professional certification (e.g. Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification is desirable.
Technical Skills Requirements
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and web-based applications is required. Ability to track and analyze complex data sets.
- Thorough working knowledge and interpretation of Federal and Iowa EHS regulations.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and collaborates effectively.
- Experienced with EHS management systems development and certification experience (ISO, VPP or similar) is desirable.
- Organize and prioritize work schedule to meet project and task deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and technical writing skills.
- Ability to read and effectively interpret federal and state regulations regarding air, waste, and water/wastewater as applicable to the operations of the facility.
Physical Requirements
- Candidate must have the ability to walk, sit, and stand for long periods of time, travel, drive and have flexibility to work weekends and holidays, as requested. This position is based at the Charles City site and supports a site in Eagle Grove. Candidate must be able to walk and climb ladders to all work areas.
- Ability to use foot, hand, head, hearing, respiratory and eye protection for extended periods of time is required.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations under stressful conditions.
- Ability to pass an ERT physical exam. Ability to lift 50 - 75 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to enter and work within permit required confined spaces.
- Must be able to reach above shoulder level, bend, kneel, push/pull, and handle/grip frequently.
- Ability to perform repetitive motion and substantial movement of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
