Job Summary
Emergency Medical Technicians possess the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients/residents ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. In an Ambulance setting, the EMT will drive mobile intensive care unit to a specified location, following instructions from emergency medical dispatcher. Respond to emergency calls, administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in pre-hospital settings. Obtain the patients'/residents' medical history and vital statistics. Help assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize the patients/residents for emergency needs and treatment procedures during transportation.
Utilize necessary medical equipment to treat the patient/resident and ascertains the extent of their injuries or illness. Communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information about the situation, to arrange transfer of patients/residents, report patient/resident information to medical staff in a timely and accurate manner, or to receive instructions for further treatment.
Ensure the ambulance is clean and washed and kept in a neat orderly condition. After each call, restock and replace used linens, blankets and other supplies, cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures, checks of all equipment so that the ambulance is ready for the next run and maintains ambulance in efficient operating condition.
Physical activities include, but not limited to, considerable use of arms and legs and moving of whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling materials.
Successfully complete at state approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Services Education Standards. Attend continuing education and training classes to maintain current certifications and/or licensure. Keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.
In a Hospital based setting, EMTs under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) will assist in performing patient/resident care services and support activities of the patient/resident care unit. Demonstrate an understanding of the Emergency Department throughout flow and anticipate workflow. Multi-skilled in order to provide expanded bedside services. Knowledge of and utilize appropriate age-related patient/resident care protocols relating to the physical and psychological needs of all ages of patients/residents. Interact with patients/residents to build rapport or provide emotional support. Ability to work with growth and development needs of a diverse population. Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's/resident's vital signs, measures input and output; collects non-invasive specimens; performs simple diagnostic tests and obtains urine specimens and records all data collected in the medical record. Responsible for preparing equipment during basic examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments using aseptic techniques.
Knowledge of medical terminology and medical equipment/supplies and helps maintain equipment, orders supplies, and cleans and restocks the treatment areas. Ability to safely assist with the transfer of patients/residents to and from procedural areas including but not limited to Radiology and other areas. Ability to communicate directly with physicians, nursing staff, patients/residents, and patient/resident families and is responsible to report changes in the patient's/resident's condition. Knowledge and be able to perform high quality basic life support (BLS) and be able to apply and use a LUCAS device. Prepare and position stable patients/residents during transport.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited Training Program required for licensing.
Must have a thorough knowledge of emergency medical technician (EMT) principles, practices and techniques, knowledge of how various equipment such as a monitor or defibrillator work and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required and depending upon location, national registry status as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level may be required.
Depending on state requirements, individuals may need to have a state license. National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS100, 200, and 700 completed, and continuing education hours as mandated by accreditation.
Additional training, provided workshops, or staff meetings attended as per policy.
Must possess a valid Driver's License and have a good driving record. Must be 18 years or older, approval needed for those under 21 to drive. May not be required for those in a Hospital setting. All driving policies, driving assignments, and insurance verification, etc. is all determined by the department leader and needs within the department and staffing.
