Engineering Project Manager Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a engineering project manager job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's strongest hiring sectors: large-scale construction and infrastructure, industrial manufacturing, energy and utilities, and civil engineering firms concentrated in the Loop and along the lakefront development corridor. Candidates with PMP certification, experience managing multidisciplinary teams, and familiarity with Chicago's municipal permitting and public-works processes stand out. Targeting general contractors, engineering consultancies, and transit agencies gives you the best shot in this market.
Which companies hire engineering project managers in Chicago?
Employers hiring engineering project managers in Chicago right now include Rush University Medical Center, Amazon, and Quanta Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's employer mix skews toward large general contractors, global engineering and consulting firms, industrial manufacturers based in the metro area, and public agencies overseeing transit and infrastructure projects.
Are there remote engineering project manager jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though remote availability depends heavily on the role. Engineering project management is often site-dependent, making fully remote work less common for construction, infrastructure, and manufacturing positions. About 17% of engineering project manager openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be in software engineering program management or enterprise IT infrastructure rather than physical project delivery.
How can I get a engineering project manager job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is through a junior project coordinator or assistant project manager role at a mid-size general contractor, civil engineering firm, or industrial manufacturer in the metro area. Chicago's active construction pipeline, including transit expansions and lakefront development, creates consistent demand for entry-level support roles. A degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field, combined with an internship or co-op in the Chicago area, strengthens your candidacy significantly.
Which industries hire the most engineering project managers in Chicago?
The sectors hiring the most engineering project managers in Chicago are Healthcare & Medical Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Retail, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's role as a major transit hub, its dense concentration of industrial manufacturers, and ongoing public infrastructure investment make it one of the more active markets in the Midwest for this role.
