Environmental Jobs in Columbus: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a environmental job in Columbus?
The strongest entry points in Columbus are environmental compliance and remediation consulting, where engineering firms, municipal utilities, and state agency contractors concentrate most of their hiring. Candidates with field sampling experience, GIS skills, or Phase I and Phase II site assessment backgrounds stand out in this market. Targeting firms near the Short North and downtown corridors, where consulting offices cluster, gives you the highest density of active openings.
Which companies hire environmentals in Columbus?
Companies currently hiring environmentals in Columbus include OhioHealth, GT Environmental, and Burns & McDonnell, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Columbus attracts a mix of regional engineering consultancies, state agency contractors, and industrial manufacturers that maintain in-house environmental compliance teams.
Are there remote environmental jobs in Columbus?
Yes, but only selectively: field-based roles like site inspection, remediation oversight, and air or water sampling are almost always on-site, while environmental data analysis, reporting, and compliance documentation roles increasingly allow remote or hybrid arrangements. About 100% of environmental openings tied to Columbus are remote or hybrid as of September 2026. Analytical and regulatory reporting positions offer the most remote flexibility for Columbus-based candidates.
How can I get a environmental job in Columbus with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Columbus is landing a field technician or environmental analyst role with a mid-size remediation or engineering consulting firm, where on-the-job training in soil and groundwater sampling is common. Columbus-area employers also hire entry-level candidates into environmental health and safety coordinator roles at manufacturing and logistics facilities on the city's east and west sides. Internship experience with the Ohio EPA or Columbus Public Health gives local candidates a concrete advantage over applicants without government exposure.
Which industries hire the most environmentals in Columbus?
Columbus environmental roles concentrate in Automotive, Manufacturing, and Healthcare & Medical Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Columbus's combination of active brownfield redevelopment, a large state government presence, and growing industrial logistics corridors keeps demand across those sectors consistently high.
