Most Alaska employers also expect a background in medical-surgical, occupational health, or rehabilitative nursing. Earning a Certified Case Manager credential strengthens your candidacy considerably, particularly for roles with insurance carriers and managed care organizations operating in the state.

Insurance carriers, workers' compensation administrators, and integrated health systems with statewide reach tend to post the most consistent openings in Alaska.

Alaska employers such as Providence Health & Services and Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska regularly bring on nurses from med-surg, occupational health, or home health backgrounds into associate case manager or utilization review roles. Completing a case management certification course and gaining exposure to discharge planning or utilization review while still in a staff nursing role gives applicants a clear edge over candidates with no coordination experience.
