Forensic Psychiatrist Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a forensic psychiatrist in Tennessee?
You must hold an active Tennessee medical license issued by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners, which requires completing medical school, a psychiatry residency, and passing the USMLE or COMLEX licensing exams. Most Tennessee employers also expect board certification in psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. A forensic psychiatry fellowship adds a competitive edge, particularly for roles with the Tennessee Department of Correction or state psychiatric hospitals, though it is not universally required.
Which companies hire forensic psychiatrists in Tennessee?
Tennessee forensic psychiatrist roles are posted by Tennessee State Government, PathGroup, and Nashville General Hospital at Meharry and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Tennessee's mix of state psychiatric hospitals, correctional health contractors, and academic medical centers means hiring is spread across both government-affiliated institutions and private behavioral health systems throughout the state.
Which Tennessee cities have the most forensic psychiatrist jobs?
Nashville and Morristown are the Tennessee cities with the most forensic psychiatrist openings, driven largely by the concentration of state psychiatric facilities, county criminal courts, and major academic health systems anchored in those metros. Nashville's role as the state capital and home to Vanderbilt makes it the dominant hub, while Memphis and Knoxville support demand through regional correctional and behavioral health infrastructure.
Are there remote forensic psychiatrist jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, but they're limited. Forensic psychiatry involves court appearances, correctional facility visits, and in-person evaluations that cannot be conducted remotely, which makes full remote positions uncommon. About 0% of forensic psychiatrist openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the constraints of the role. Telehealth components most often appear in outpatient competency evaluation follow-ups or administrative and consulting work rather than core forensic duties.
How can I get hired as a forensic psychiatrist in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a general staff psychiatrist role at a Tennessee state psychiatric hospital such as Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute or Memphis Mental Health Institute, where exposure to forensic populations is built into the caseload. Completing a forensic psychiatry fellowship at Vanderbilt or a comparable accredited program significantly strengthens candidacy. Physicians transitioning from general inpatient psychiatry can also enter through correctional health contractors operating in Tennessee facilities, where mentorship under senior forensic psychiatrists is common.
Where can I find and apply to forensic psychiatrist jobs in Tennessee?
You can find and apply to forensic psychiatrist jobs in Tennessee on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and location preferences, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
