Nurse Practitioner Or Physician Assistant Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in Tennessee?
Nurse practitioners in Tennessee must hold an active license issued by the Tennessee Board of Nursing, which requires completing an accredited graduate-level NP program and passing a national certification exam such as the AANP or ANCC. Physician assistants must be licensed by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners after graduating from an accredited PA program and passing the PANCE. Both roles require a collaborative practice agreement with a physician under Tennessee law.
Which companies hire nurse practitioner or physician assistants in Tennessee?
Employers hiring nurse practitioner or physician assistants in Tennessee right now include Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Optum, and Fast Pace Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Which Tennessee cities have the most nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs?
The cities with the most nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings in Tennessee are Nashville, Memphis, and Brentwood. Nashville anchors demand through its concentration of major health systems and corporate healthcare headquarters, while Memphis and Knoxville support strong hiring through regional hospital networks and academic medical centers that serve large patient populations across surrounding rural counties.

About 6% of nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting that most roles are site-based. The remote positions that do exist tend to be in telehealth primary care or chronic disease management, where providers conduct video consultations rather than in-person exams.
How can I get hired as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate or post-professional residency programs, several of which are offered by large Tennessee health systems such as Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Ballad Health in primary care and hospital medicine. Candidates who have worked as registered nurses or paramedics often move into PA or NP roles by building clinical hours while completing their graduate programs. A completed national certification, a Tennessee license in good standing, and documented clinical hours from your training rotations are the credentials that give new graduates a competitive edge.
