Forensic Psychiatrist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a forensic psychiatrist in Texas?
You must complete medical school, a psychiatry residency, and a one-year accredited forensic psychiatry fellowship, then obtain a full Texas medical license through the Texas Medical Board. Texas requires a separate DEA registration for controlled substances. Many forensic positions in Texas also require credentialing through the Texas Department of Criminal Justice or county jail health authorities, and board certification in forensic psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology strengthens any application.
Which companies hire forensic psychiatrists in Texas?
Employers hiring forensic psychiatrists in Texas right now include Robson Forensic, Whitley Penn, and Sam Houston State University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Texas's large correctional and civil commitment infrastructure means state agencies and county health contractors are consistently among the most active recruiters.
Which Texas cities have the most forensic psychiatrist jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Irving have the most forensic psychiatrist openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas lead because of their large county jail systems, academic medical centers, and dense court activity, while San Antonio's concentration of military installations, VA facilities, and Bexar County's civil commitment program generates steady openings independent of the major metros.
Are there remote forensic psychiatrist jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Forensic psychiatry is heavily court-facing and facility-based, so most roles require on-site evaluations, testimony, or correctional access. About 33% of forensic psychiatrist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to involve record review, second-opinion consultations, or telehealth competency screenings rather than primary forensic evaluation work.
How can I get hired as a forensic psychiatrist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your forensic psychiatry fellowship at a Texas program, such as those affiliated with UT Southwestern, McGovern Medical School, or UT Health San Antonio, and then applying directly to county jail or state hospital positions that accept newly boarded candidates. The Texas Department of State Health Services and county hospital districts regularly hire forensic psychiatrists at the staff level, where fellowship training substitutes for independent experience. Obtaining your Texas Medical Board license and DEA registration before completing fellowship removes the most common hiring delay.
Where can I find and apply to forensic psychiatrist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to forensic psychiatrist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from correctional facilities, county health systems, academic medical centers, and private forensic practices. Find the roles that fit your credentials and apply directly through each listing.
