About the role
Looking for an internship where you'll solve real business problems instead of simply observing from the sidelines?
As the FP&A Data Specialist, you'll join Selkirk's Finance team during an exciting period of organizational growth and systems transformation. Working directly with our Senior Financial Analyst, you'll help improve the way financial data is organized, connected, and reported across the business.
This is a hands-on opportunity to work with SQL, Power BI, Excel, and enterprise financial systems while helping build practical tools that improve reporting, automate manual processes, and support the transition to a new accounting platform. You'll play an important role in ensuring our data remains accurate, connected, and actionable as our systems and reporting structures evolve.
If you enjoy solving puzzles, building efficient solutions, and turning complex data into meaningful insights, you'll have the opportunity to make a real impact while developing highly transferable technical and analytical skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build Excel, SQL, and Power BI based tools that improve reporting accuracy and streamline Finance processes.
- Help map, validate, and reconcile financial data between legacy and new systems during a company-wide accounting platform implementation.
- Develop solutions that maintain data integrity and preserve reporting visibility as financial systems, department structures, and the chart of accounts evolve.
- Write SQL queries to extract, organize, validate, and transform financial data.
- Support Power BI reporting by preparing datasets and assisting with dashboard development and reporting enhancements.
- Assist with month-end reporting through data validation, reconciliations, and budget-to-actual analysis.
- Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve reporting efficiency.
- Document reporting logic, data mapping, and Finance Department standard operating procedures to support long-term scalability.
- Collaborate with Finance and cross-functional teams to support data-related initiatives and special projects.
Qualifications
We're looking for someone who enjoys working with data, solving technical challenges, and continuously learning new tools. This role is ideal for someone looking to gain real-world experience applying technical skills in a finance environment.
What We're Looking For
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field.
- Strong Excel skills with experience analyzing, organizing, and working with large datasets.
- Experience writing SQL queries through coursework, internships, research, or personal projects.
- Experience creating reports or dashboards using Power BI through coursework, internships, or independent projects is strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in building practical solutions that improve efficiency.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate, reliable data.
- Comfortable learning new ERP systems, financial software, and business intelligence tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote environment.
- Self-motivated, curious, and eager to contribute while developing new technical skills.
If you're excited about this opportunity but don't meet every qualification, we still encourage you to apply. We value curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn just as much as technical knowledge.
Why You'll Love this Internship
- Work on meaningful projects that directly support business decisions.
- Gain hands-on experience with SQL, Power BI, Excel, and enterprise financial systems.
- Help solve real data and reporting challenges during a large-scale systems transformation.
- Learn alongside experienced Finance professionals in a collaborative, remote environment.
- Build technical and analytical skills that will prepare you for future careers in finance, analytics, business intelligence, or data engineering.

Who's Hiring

Tips for Your FP&A Manager Internship Search
Apply earlier than your peers
Large employers with structured summer cohorts open applications the preceding fall and close them months before the internship begins. Smaller companies and co-ops post closer to start dates, so openings appear throughout the year. Check listings consistently rather than waiting for a single season.
Build project evidence before you apply
FP&A manager intern hiring teams expect limited work history and assess candidates on tangible proof instead. Build two or three documented projects, a three-statement financial model, a department budget variance analysis, or a scenario planning exercise, using Excel, Google Sheets, or a planning tool, and make them accessible to share with recruiters.
Work campus channels and direct applications together
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and recruiters there often move faster for students they meet in person. Professors and career center staff frequently know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach.
Practice the fp&a manager intern interview format out loud
FP&A manager intern screens typically combine a technical or financial modeling exercise with behavioral questions about how you structure analysis and communicate findings. Practice walking through a model or case out loud, explaining your assumptions as you go, interviewers weigh how you think through a problem as much as the final answer.
Target structured rotational finance programs early
Many larger employers run rotational finance internships that move participants through FP&A, accounting, and treasury over a defined cohort. These programs are built to develop candidates new to corporate finance, recruit heavily in the fall, and fill quickly. Identify the programs that fit your goals and apply in the first wave rather than waiting.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 25% of the fp&a manager internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to, on-site, hybrid, or remote, before you start reviewing postings on Migrate Mate, then filter by work type and location so you spend your time on roles you can actually accept.
FP&A Manager Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an fp&a manager internship?
Lead with coursework, personal finance projects, and a portfolio rather than work history, hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. A documented financial model, budgeting case study, or variance analysis gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can an fp&a manager internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What drives it most is your performance on real deliverables, available headcount on the team, and return-offer timing in the budget cycle. Position yourself by owning your projects fully and communicating results clearly, without building your plan around an offer that isn't promised.
When should I apply for fp&a manager internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers with formal summer cohorts often recruit the preceding fall, closing applications months before the internship starts. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to their start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking listings regularly and setting alerts means you won't miss either wave.
Are fp&a manager internships paid?
Most professional fp&a manager internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show pay where the employer discloses it. Reviewing individual postings is the most reliable way to compare what different employers offer before you apply.
What should an fp&a manager internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that show the tools you used, financial models in Excel or Google Sheets, budgeting analyses, scenario planning exercises, or case studies, and link to them where possible. Add relevant coursework in finance, accounting, or data analysis, and keep the whole resume to one page.
Are there remote fp&a manager internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 75% of the fp&a manager internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill quickly because they attract applicants from across the country, so apply early and filter by work type to see them before they close.
What is a rotational finance internship, and does it apply to fp&a manager roles?
Rotational finance internships place participants across multiple functions, FP&A, treasury, accounting, and investor relations, over a defined program, typically at larger companies. These programs target candidates new to corporate finance, recruit early in the fall recruiting season, and are competitive. If you're targeting an fp&a manager career path, identify these programs and apply in the first wave.
Can international students get fp&a manager internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
