Gas Plumber Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a gas plumber in California?
To work as a gas plumber in California, you need a Journeyman Plumber license issued by the California Contractors State License Board, which requires completing a state-approved plumbing apprenticeship and passing the CSLB licensing exam. Most apprenticeships run through the UA Plumbers Union or similar programs and combine on-the-job hours with classroom instruction in California-specific codes. A high school diploma or equivalent is the standard educational baseline.
How much do gas plumbers make in California?
Gas plumbers in California earn a median of about $72,830 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,350 for the lowest 10% to over $131,100 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire gas plumbers in California?
Employers hiring gas plumbers in California right now include Pacific Gas and Electric, Gas Transmission Systems, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's active new construction market and aging utility infrastructure mean established mechanical contractors and gas utilities maintain consistent year-round hiring pipelines across the state.
Which California cities have the most gas plumber jobs?
Oakland, Danville, and West Sacramento have the most gas plumber openings in California right now. Los Angeles drives the largest share through its volume of residential and commercial construction projects, while San Jose's tech-campus build-outs and Sacramento's ongoing public infrastructure spending generate steady demand for journeyman and senior-level gas plumbers across the greater metro areas.
Are there remote gas plumber jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Gas plumber work is hands-on and site-specific, so the overwhelming majority of roles require physical presence on job sites. About 71% of gas plumber openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve estimating, project coordination, or inspection roles rather than direct installation or service work.
How can I get hired as a gas plumber in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is enrolling in a registered plumbing apprenticeship through the UA Local 582 or similar California-affiliated union programs, which accept candidates without prior experience and pay you while you train. Large California mechanical contractors and utility companies like SoCal Gas also hire pre-apprentice helpers and plumber's assistants as entry-level stepping stones. Completing California-approved OSHA safety training before applying gives candidates a practical edge in competitive markets like Los Angeles and the Bay Area.
