About the Role
The Geotechnical Engineer contributes to geotechnical engineering activities to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective design and operation of open-pit slopes, waste dumps, leach pads, and related infrastructure. This role provides technical expertise, risk assessment, and operational support to mine planning, geology, and operations teams, ensuring robust geotechnical design and performance throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Risk Management
- Identify geotechnical risks and implement controls to ensure a safe working environment for employees and contractors.
- Proactively assess and resolve emerging stability and ground control issues.
- Ensure all geotechnical work complies with AGA standards and regulatory requirements.
Geotechnical Design & Analysis
- Develop and implement geotechnical design criteria for mine plans and operational activities.
- Analyze geotechnical testwork data and define engineering parameters for slopes, foundations, and infrastructure.
- Conduct trade-off studies to optimize geotechnical design and mine planning solutions.
- Ensure geotechnical considerations are fully integrated into mine design, scheduling, and execution.
Geotechnical Programs & Data Management
- Plan, coordinate, and manage geotechnical investigation and testwork programs.
- Define sample selection criteria and collaborate with geology teams on representative sampling.
- Manage collection, analysis, and interpretation of geotechnical data and ensure accurate technical reporting.
- Maintain geotechnical databases and documentation in alignment with company standards.
Technical Oversight & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure design deliverables meet AGA engineering standards and are practical, reliable, and cost-effective.
- Identify improvements in geotechnical design processes, systems, and operational practices.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, performance, and cost efficiency.
Collaboration & Integration
- Work closely with mine planning, geology, operations, and engineering teams to ensure alignment and effective project delivery.
- Coordinate with external consultants, laboratories, and engineering partners as required.
- Communicate geotechnical risks, findings, and recommendations clearly to project teams and leadership.
Requirements
- BSc in Engineering Geology or MSc in Geotechnical Engineering.
- 5–7 years of geotechnical engineering experience in mining or related industries.
- Experience supporting open-pit operations and geotechnical design.
- Demonstrated experience contributing to project or operational teams.
- Practical application of geotechnical design in mining environments.
- Strong understanding of rock mechanics, soil mechanics, hydrology, and engineering geology.
- Proficiency with geotechnical software (e.g., Rocscience, Unwedge) and mine planning tools (Vulcan, Deswik).
- Ability to interpret geotechnical data and assess excavation performance trends.
- Understanding of mine planning processes and integration of geotechnical inputs.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- High level of integrity, accountability, and attention to detail.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Valid driver’s license required for site travel.
