Tips for Your Geriatric Psychiatrist Job Search
Tailor your CV for geriatric-specific competencies
Highlight rotations, fellowships, or case volume specifically with older adult populations. Hiring committees at memory care programs and geriatric psychiatry units want to see documented experience with neurocognitive assessment, dementia-related behavioral symptoms, and polypharmacy management, not a generic psychiatry CV.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists geriatric psychiatrist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by care setting, not just title
The day-to-day differs sharply between inpatient consult-liaison, outpatient memory clinics, and long-term care facilities. Filter openings by setting before applying so your cover letter speaks directly to the patient population and team structure the employer describes.
Prepare concrete examples of complex case management
Interviewers at academic medical centers and integrated health systems routinely ask how you manage behavioral disturbances in dementia or navigate capacity evaluations in older adults. Prepare two or three specific cases that show your clinical reasoning, not just your training credentials.
Negotiate protected time for geriatric-specific work
Many offers bundle geriatric psychiatry duties into general adult psychiatry positions. Before signing, clarify how much of your schedule is dedicated to older adult caseloads, whether interdisciplinary team time is included, and if there is protected time for memory clinic or consultative work.
Follow up with a clinical question, not a status check
After an interview, send a follow-up that references a specific clinical or programmatic challenge the department mentioned, such as their approach to reducing antipsychotic use in long-term care. It signals genuine interest and distinguishes you from candidates who send a generic thank-you.
Geriatric Psychiatrist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most geriatric psychiatrists?
The companies hiring the most geriatric psychiatrists right now include Oregon Health & Science University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Massachusetts General Hospital/Mgpo, with the largest share of openings in Oregon, Pennsylvania, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Academic medical centers, large integrated health systems, and memory care networks consistently represent the highest concentration of active postings.
How many geriatric psychiatrist jobs are remote?
About 0% of geriatric psychiatrist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the clinical nature of most roles in this subspecialty. Telepsychiatry positions covering outpatient follow-up, medication management, and rural long-term care consultations account for the majority of remote-eligible work in this field.
How do you become a geriatric psychiatrist?
You complete medical school, then a four-year residency in general psychiatry accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. After residency, you complete a one-year geriatric psychiatry fellowship, which is the standard pathway to subspecialty recognition. You then sit for the geriatric psychiatry added qualifications examination through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology to become board-certified in the subspecialty.
Can I get a geriatric psychiatrist job with limited experience in older adult care?
Yes, entry-level attending roles and positions at larger academic centers sometimes hire candidates whose geriatric exposure came through general psychiatry rotations rather than a dedicated fellowship. Emphasizing any case experience with late-life mood disorders, dementia-related behavioral symptoms, or capacity evaluations strengthens your application. Some employers also offer structured mentorship or protected time with experienced geriatric psychiatrists to build subspecialty depth on the job.
What does the geriatric psychiatrist interview process look like?
Most hiring processes begin with a phone or video screen with a department chief, medical director, or recruiter. A formal on-site or virtual interview follows, typically involving meetings with clinical leadership, potential colleagues, and sometimes an administrative team. Academic positions often include a case presentation or grand rounds talk. Final stages commonly involve a contract discussion covering compensation structure, call schedule, protected time, and clinical expectations before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to geriatric psychiatrist jobs?
You can find and apply to geriatric psychiatrist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from health systems, memory care programs, academic medical centers, and outpatient practices across the United States. Find roles that match your training, setting preference, and location, then apply directly to each listing from the same page.
