Verify your degree meets EB-2 requirements
A U.S.-equivalent bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field is the baseline for EB-2 eligibility. If your credential is foreign, get a formal equivalency evaluation before applying, since the PERM audit can surface documentation gaps late in the process.
Target employers with PERM filing history
Search OFLC disclosure data to find employers who have filed PERM applications for accounting roles before. Firms with a track record are far less likely to abandon sponsorship mid-process than those filing for the first time.
Search Migrate Mate for sponsoring employers
Filter by Accounting Assistant roles on Migrate Mate to surface companies with active green card sponsorship history. This cuts out the guesswork of cold-applying to employers who haven't committed to PERM filing for this job category.
Confirm the PERM wage covers your offered salary
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Run your job title and ZIP code through the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer so there are no surprises when the employer files the LCA.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 with your employer early
Accounting Assistants are often filed under EB-3, but if the role genuinely requires an advanced degree or specialized credentials, EB-2 is possible. Getting this classification right at the PERM stage matters because it affects your priority date and backlog wait.
Ask about concurrent I-140 and I-485 filing
If a visa number is immediately available for your country and category, USCIS allows concurrent filing of the I-140 immigrant petition and I-485 adjustment of status. This can shorten your overall wait time significantly compared to sequential filing.
Green Card Accounting Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Accounting Assistant role qualify for green card sponsorship?
Yes. Accounting Assistant positions typically qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers, requiring at least two years of training or a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. If the role requires an advanced degree or equivalent credentials, it may qualify under EB-2 instead. The employer must complete PERM labor certification through DOL before filing the I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS.
How does green card sponsorship for this role differ from H-1B sponsorship?
Green card sponsorship through PERM and EB-3 leads to permanent residency, not a temporary work visa. There is no annual lottery for EB-3, so the process isn't subject to the H-1B visa cap uncertainty. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification alone can take six months to over a year, and priority date backlogs add wait time for applicants from countries like India and China.
What does the PERM labor certification process require from my employer?
Your employer must conduct a supervised recruitment process to show no qualified U.S. workers were available for the role. They file the ETA Form 9089 with DOL, and PERM audits are common in accounting fields. The job description used in the PERM filing must match the actual duties you'll perform, so it's worth reviewing it carefully before the employer files.
How do I find Accounting Assistant jobs where employers are willing to sponsor a green card?
Use Migrate Mate to search specifically for Accounting Assistant roles with green card sponsorship history. Many employers are open to sponsorship but don't advertise it in job postings. Filtering by PERM filing history surfaces employers who have committed to the process before, which is a much stronger signal of willingness than a general 'visa sponsorship available' disclaimer in a job ad.
Does my accounting credential need to be U.S.-based to qualify for PERM sponsorship?
No, but foreign credentials must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency. For EB-3, a foreign bachelor's degree in accounting is generally accepted if a credential evaluation agency confirms it meets the U.S. standard. For EB-2, equivalency documentation becomes more scrutinized. USCIS reviews the evaluation during adjudication, so using a recognized evaluation service early protects your case.
