Match your credentials to the right EB category
Adjunct roles requiring a master's degree or higher typically qualify for EB-2, while those requiring only a bachelor's degree fall under EB-3. Confirm which category applies before you apply so your credential documents align with the PERM filing from day one.
Target institutions with active PERM filing history
Community colleges and regional universities sponsor foreign faculty more regularly than small private institutions. Search DOL PERM disclosure data by institution name and SOC code 25-1099 to identify schools that have filed for instructors in your discipline within the last two years.
Ask HR about the recruitment documentation requirement
PERM requires your employer to prove no qualified U.S. workers were available for the role. Adjunct hiring moves fast, so ask HR early whether they can run a compliant recruitment campaign alongside your hire to satisfy DOL requirements without reposting the position months later.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring adjunct employers
Adjunct sponsorship opportunities rarely surface through generic job searches. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Adjunct Instructor roles at institutions with green card sponsorship history, so you're applying where a PERM pathway already exists rather than negotiating it from scratch.
Secure a foreign credential evaluation before PERM begins
If your degree was earned outside the U.S., DOL requires a credential equivalency evaluation as part of the PERM record. Get a NACES-member evaluation completed before your employer files, since delays at this stage can stall the entire labor certification process.
Understand the priority date backlog for your country
EB-2 and EB-3 priority dates vary significantly by country of birth. Check the USCIS Visa Bulletin before accepting a role, especially if you're from India or China, where multi-year backlogs can separate PERM approval from actual green card issuance.
Green Card Adjunct Instructor: Frequently Asked Questions
Can an adjunct instructor position qualify for a green card?
Yes, provided the position meets the DOL's specialty occupation standard and the employer is willing to sponsor. Most adjunct roles requiring a master's degree qualify under EB-2; those requiring a bachelor's degree fall under EB-3. The employer must complete PERM labor certification, file an I-140 petition, and the employee must complete adjustment of status or consular processing.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for adjunct instructors?
Green card sponsorship through PERM and I-140 leads to permanent residency, not a temporary status that requires renewal every few years. There's no annual lottery for EB-3, and EB-2 has no cap concerns for most countries. The tradeoff is timeline: the full PERM-to-green-card process typically takes two to five years, compared to H-1B visa status that can begin within months of selection.
Which institutions are most likely to sponsor adjunct instructors for a green card?
Public community colleges, state university systems, and research universities with established international faculty programs are the most active PERM sponsors for instructors. Smaller private colleges and for-profit institutions sponsor less frequently. You can identify active sponsors by reviewing DOL PERM disclosure data filtered by SOC code 25-1099, which covers postsecondary teachers broadly.
Where can I find adjunct instructor jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Adjunct Instructor roles at institutions with green card sponsorship history, filtering out employers who have never filed PERM. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that a school won't support permanent residency sponsorship for adjunct-level hires.
Does a part-time adjunct position qualify for PERM sponsorship?
DOL generally requires the sponsored position to be a permanent, full-time role for PERM eligibility. Part-time adjunct contracts, which are common in U.S. higher education, typically don't meet this standard. If your institution wants to sponsor you, you'll usually need a full-time appointment or a conversion to a continuing lecturer or assistant professor line before PERM can be filed.
