Elementary School Teacher Green Card Jobs
Elementary School Teacher roles can qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification, which requires your employer to document that no qualified U.S. workers are available. Public school districts and private institutions both sponsor, but filing timelines, prevailing wage requirements, and credential evaluation steps vary significantly by state and district.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as an Elementary School Teacher
Get your foreign degree evaluated early
PERM requires your credentials to meet the U.S. equivalent of a bachelor's in education. Submit your transcripts to a NACES-member evaluation service before applying, since incomplete evaluations are a common cause of PERM delays.
Obtain state teaching licensure before the offer
Most school districts won't initiate PERM until you hold a valid state teaching license. Research your target state's licensure requirements for foreign-trained teachers, as some states require additional coursework or supervised student teaching hours.
Target districts with established PERM filing history
Use Migrate Mate to search for elementary school teacher roles at districts that have sponsored green cards before. Employers with PERM experience move faster and make fewer procedural errors that stall your case.
Verify the prevailing wage before your offer letter
DOL sets the prevailing wage for your role by location and experience level. Run a search on OFLC Wage Search using the correct SOC code for elementary teachers so you can confirm your offered salary meets the DOL minimum before PERM is filed.
Clarify who pays PERM filing and attorney costs
DOL rules prohibit employers from passing PERM legal fees to you. Negotiate this explicitly during the offer stage, since smaller districts sometimes misunderstand this rule and attempt to share costs in ways that violate PERM regulations.

Find Elementary School Teacher JobsElementary School Teacher Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do elementary school teachers qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Elementary school teacher roles typically qualify under EB-3 for professionals, since the position requires a bachelor's degree in education or a related field. EB-2 sponsorship is possible if the role requires an advanced degree and the employer can document that requirement. Most district-sponsored PERM cases for this title proceed under EB-3.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for teachers?
Unlike the H-1B, EB-3 green card sponsorship has no annual lottery and leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary status. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and visa availability can take several years combined. H-1B sponsorship is faster to activate but requires renewal and provides no path to permanence on its own.
Which types of employers sponsor green cards for elementary school teachers?
Public school districts, charter school networks, and accredited private schools all sponsor PERM-based green cards. Public districts in high-demand regions, particularly those with bilingual education programs or teacher shortages, file more frequently. Religious and independent schools are less common sponsors but do file in certain cases. Searching by employer type on Migrate Mate helps you filter for districts with active sponsorship history.
What documents does a school district need to start the PERM process?
Your employer needs a copy of your credential evaluation, your state teaching license, and proof that the offered position meets DOL's prevailing wage for your location and experience level. The district's immigration attorney will also need to conduct a supervised recruitment process, documenting that no qualified U.S. workers applied for the role before PERM is submitted to DOL.
How long does the green card process typically take for a sponsored teacher?
PERM labor certification currently averages over a year at DOL due to audit backlogs. I-140 adjudication at USCIS adds several more months under standard processing. If your priority date is current, adjustment of status or consular processing follows. For most countries other than India and China, the full process from PERM filing to green card approval runs roughly two to four years.
