Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in K 12 Education
Credential your foreign teaching degree first
State teacher certification boards require foreign degree evaluations before issuing a license. Get a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-member agency early, since PERM requires your credentials to meet the minimum requirements stated in the job posting.
Target districts with chronic shortage designations
Districts that qualify as Teacher Shortage Areas under federal designation face a lower recruitment burden in PERM. Shortages in special education, English as a Second Language, and secondary STEM subjects make sponsorship more likely because domestic recruitment efforts repeatedly come up short.
Search verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter K-12 education employers with active PERM and I-140 filing history. Seeing which districts have sponsored foreign teachers before tells you where the HR infrastructure and institutional willingness already exist.
Understand your state license portability before relocating
PERM ties your sponsorship to a specific employer and role location. If your state license isn't transferable to another state, your green card process restarts with a new employer. Confirm reciprocity agreements before committing to a district in a different state.
Confirm the offered wage meets DOL prevailing wage
Before signing an offer letter, verify the salary meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your role and district location using the OFLC Wage Search. A below-prevailing-wage offer will cause PERM to fail, costing both you and the employer significant time.
Time your green card filing around the academic calendar
PERM recruitment must be completed before filing, and school districts often recruit on annual hiring cycles tied to the school year. Filing your PERM after spring recruitment concludes aligns the documented recruitment effort with DOL's required advertising timelines.
Green Card K 12 Education: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a public school district sponsor a foreign teacher for a green card?
Yes. Public school districts, charter schools, and private schools can all sponsor foreign nationals for EB-2 or EB-3 green cards through the PERM labor certification process. Districts in subject-matter shortage areas, particularly special education, bilingual education, and secondary STEM, have a stronger basis for demonstrating that no qualified U.S. worker was available, which is the core PERM requirement.
How does green card sponsorship differ from an H-1B for K-12 teachers?
Unlike the H-1B visa, which is subject to an annual lottery and caps at 85,000 slots, EB-3 green card sponsorship has no annual lottery and no employer-specific cap. The timeline is longer, typically three to five years from PERM filing to approval for most countries, but the outcome is permanent residency rather than a temporary, renewable status. Many school districts already familiar with J-1 visa or H-1B programs find the PERM process more predictable once they've done it once.
What subjects or specializations make green card sponsorship more realistic for teachers?
Special education, English as a Second Language, bilingual education, and secondary mathematics and science are federally designated shortage areas in many states. These designations matter because PERM requires the employer to demonstrate that no qualified U.S. worker applied for the position. Shortage-area subjects have documented recruitment difficulty, which supports the district's case during PERM review by DOL.
How do I find K-12 employers that have already sponsored green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search for K-12 education employers by their PERM and I-140 filing history, so you can identify districts that have successfully sponsored foreign teachers before. Approaching an employer with an established sponsorship process significantly reduces the risk that HR unfamiliarity will derail your case after an offer is made.
Does my foreign teaching credential automatically qualify me for EB-2 or EB-3?
Not automatically. For EB-3, you need a credential that is recognized as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree in education or a related field, typically confirmed through a NACES-member credential evaluation. EB-2 applies if the role requires an advanced degree, such as positions in curriculum leadership, special education with a master's level requirement, or instructional coaching. Your state teaching license is a separate requirement and must be secured independently before or during the PERM process.
