High School Teacher Green Card Jobs
High School Teacher roles qualify for green card sponsorship under EB-2 and EB-3 when a U.S. employer files a PERM labor certification confirming no qualified domestic candidates are available. Most public school districts and private institutions sponsor foreign teachers permanently, making this one of the more accessible PERM pathways for education professionals.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a High School Teacher
Verify your teaching credential equivalency early
U.S. states set their own teacher licensure requirements, and a foreign degree may need a credential evaluation before a district can file your PERM. Get a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-member organization before you start applying.
Target districts with active J-1 or H-1B histories
Districts that have previously sponsored teachers on nonimmigrant visas already have immigration counsel and internal HR processes in place. They're structurally better positioned to navigate the PERM filing timeline without treating it as a one-off project.
Search green card sponsoring schools on Migrate Mate
Filter by subject area and state to find schools that have filed PERM applications for teaching roles. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with documented green card sponsorship history so you're not guessing which districts will actually sponsor.
Understand how subject shortage designations affect PERM
STEM, special education, and bilingual teaching roles are frequently on state shortage lists. While a shortage designation doesn't waive PERM, it does make the DOL's recruitment documentation easier for your employer to satisfy, which can shorten the overall timeline.
Confirm your EB-2 or EB-3 classification before the I-140
EB-3 covers roles requiring a bachelor's degree, which fits most standard teaching positions. If you hold a master's degree and the role requires it, EB-2 may apply. Your employer's attorney should confirm the correct category before filing the I-140 with USCIS.
Ask about concurrent I-485 filing during contract negotiations
If your priority date is current when your I-140 is approved, you can file for adjustment of status without waiting. Raise this with the hiring district before signing your contract so the school's immigration counsel can plan the filing sequence accordingly.

Find High School Teacher JobsHigh School Teacher Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do public school districts actually sponsor teachers for green cards?
Yes, many public school districts sponsor foreign teachers through the PERM labor certification process, particularly for hard-to-fill subjects like special education, STEM, and bilingual instruction. The district acts as the petitioning employer, files the PERM application with DOL, and then submits the I-140 immigrant petition to USCIS. Sponsorship timelines vary by district, but the pathway is well-established in the education sector.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for teaching roles?
H-1B is a temporary nonimmigrant visa, typically capped at three years with one extension, and subject to an annual lottery. Green card sponsorship via PERM leads to permanent residency with no cap concerns at the EB-3 level for most countries outside India and China. The PERM process takes longer upfront, often 12 to 24 months from labor certification to I-485 approval, but the outcome is permanent authorization rather than a visa you need to renew or win again.
What does the PERM process require from the school district?
The district must conduct a formal DOL-supervised recruitment process to demonstrate no qualified U.S. workers are available for the role. This includes posting the position, documenting applicants, and filing an ETA Form 9089 with DOL. The job duties and minimum requirements in the PERM application must match what the district actually needs, so the job description used during hiring should align precisely with what gets filed.
How can I find high schools that sponsor teachers for green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search for teaching positions at schools with a verified history of green card sponsorship, filtered by state and subject area. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and asking HR departments about their sponsorship policies after the fact. Targeting employers who have filed PERM applications for comparable roles significantly improves your chances of a successful sponsorship offer.
Does my teaching license need to be in place before the PERM is filed?
Not necessarily, but the PERM application must list the state licensure requirement if it's a condition of employment. Many districts file PERM for candidates who hold a comparable foreign credential and are in the process of obtaining state licensure. USCIS and DOL allow conditional requirements as long as the candidate will meet them before starting work. Confirm the exact licensure language with the district's immigration attorney before the ETA 9089 is submitted.
