Green Card Assistant Controller Jobs
Assistant Controller roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification, which requires your employer to document that no qualified U.S. worker is available. Accounting leadership positions with CPA credentials or advanced degrees in finance often satisfy EB-2 advanced-degree requirements, making permanent residency sponsorship a realistic path for foreign professionals in this field.

Align your credentials with PERM requirements
PERM requires your employer to define minimum qualifications in the job posting before advertising. Make sure your CPA, CMA, or master's degree in accounting is documented and matches those stated requirements exactly, or USCIS may flag a discrepancy during adjudication.
Verify your prevailing wage tier early
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for Assistant Controller under SOC code 11-3031 in your target metro. Your offered salary must meet or exceed the DOL-certified wage, and knowing your tier before negotiating helps you avoid a PERM denial.
Target employers with PERM filing history
Mid-size and large companies in manufacturing, healthcare, and financial services regularly sponsor foreign accounting professionals through PERM. Search Migrate Mate to find Assistant Controller openings at employers who have active green card sponsorship programs, filtering by EB-2 and EB-3 categories.
Distinguish EB-2 from EB-3 before your offer letter
If your role requires a master's degree or you hold a U.S. CPA with a bachelor's plus progressive experience, push your employer to file under EB-2. EB-2 priority dates often move faster for candidates born outside high-demand countries, which can shorten your overall residency timeline.
Request concurrent I-140 and I-485 filing when eligible
If your priority date is current when your employer files the I-140, you can file the I-485 adjustment of status concurrently. This allows you to apply for an Employment Authorization Document and avoid gaps in work authorization while USCIS completes adjudication.
Negotiate the PERM advertising period into your start timeline
PERM requires a mandatory 30-day job-order posting and two Sunday newspaper ads before the employer can file. Factor at least four to six months of pre-filing recruitment into your expected start date so both you and the employer have realistic expectations from the outset.
Green Card Assistant Controller: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Assistant Controller role typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Assistant Controller positions qualify for EB-3 as a skilled worker role requiring a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. If your employer specifies a master's degree or you hold progressive experience that demonstrates an advanced-degree equivalent, EB-2 classification may apply. Your employer's attorney documents the minimum requirements in the PERM application, and those stated qualifications determine which preference category fits.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for an Assistant Controller?
H-1B visa is a temporary status capped at 65,000 slots annually with a lottery, while EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM has no annual cap on approvals at the petition level. The green card process is longer, often two to four years from PERM filing to approval, but it leads to permanent residency rather than a renewable temporary status. For many countries outside India and China, EB-3 priority dates remain current, meaning no backlog wait after I-140 approval.
What documents should I prepare before my employer starts the PERM process?
Gather official transcripts, degree certificates, and any CPA or CMA license documentation before PERM begins. Your employer will need to state minimum qualifications in the job posting, and your credentials must match those requirements precisely. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization is typically required so DOL and USCIS can confirm equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's or master's degree.
How do I find Assistant Controller jobs where the employer is open to green card sponsorship?
Many employers who sponsor green cards don't advertise it explicitly in job postings. Migrate Mate lets you search Assistant Controller openings filtered by employers with PERM and EB sponsorship history, so you can identify companies that have a documented track record of sponsoring foreign professionals rather than guessing from generic job descriptions.
Can I switch employers after my employer files the PERM but before I have a green card?
Changing employers before your I-140 is approved typically means restarting the entire PERM process with your new employer, since PERM and I-140 are tied to a specific employer and job. Once your I-140 is approved and your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days, portability rules under AC21 allow you to change to a same or similar role without losing your priority date, which is critical for Assistant Controller candidates managing long adjudication timelines.
