Green Card Counseling Psychologist Jobs
Counseling Psychologist roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which requires a licensed employer to document that no qualified U.S. worker is available. A doctoral or master's degree in psychology is typically required, and state licensure requirements shape which employers can initiate your petition.

Verify your degree meets PERM requirements
PERM job descriptions must specify the minimum qualifying degree. A master's in counseling psychology typically supports EB-3 professional classification, while a doctoral degree with specialized clinical training often supports EB-2 advanced-degree petitions. Confirm your credentials match the exact language your employer intends to use.
Target employers with PERM filing history
Community mental health centers, hospital systems, and university counseling services file PERM applications more frequently than private solo practices, which rarely have the HR infrastructure to manage a multi-year sponsorship process. Prioritize roles at organizations with dedicated HR or legal compliance teams.
Address state licensure before your I-140 is approved
Most PERM job postings for counseling psychologists require state licensure as a condition of employment. If your foreign credentials need evaluation through a state psychology board, start that process during the PERM recruitment phase to avoid delays between I-140 approval and your start date.
Search sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter counseling psychology roles by employers with active green card filing history. This saves months of manual research by surfacing organizations that have already navigated the PERM process for similar licensed mental health roles.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier your employer will use
DOL assigns PERM roles to one of four wage levels based on experience and supervision requirements. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your SOC code and intended work location before your employer submits the prevailing wage determination request.
Prepare for the PERM recruitment documentation window
PERM requires your employer to complete a mandatory recruitment period and retain documentation for five years. Understand that this process typically takes six to twelve months before the I-140 petition can be filed, so negotiate your employment start date or visa bridge accordingly.
Green Card Counseling Psychologist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Counseling Psychologist role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories can apply. EB-2 covers advanced-degree professionals, so a master's or doctoral degree in psychology with a job offer from a sponsoring employer generally qualifies. EB-3 covers professionals requiring at least a bachelor's degree. Most licensed counseling psychologist positions satisfy EB-2 criteria because the role routinely requires a graduate-level credential as the minimum qualification, not merely preferred.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
PERM leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary work authorization period. Unlike the H-1B visa, EB-3 petitions for counseling psychologists from most countries outside India and China face no meaningful backlog, meaning priority dates are often current. PERM also has no annual lottery, so your petition moves forward on the employer's timeline rather than a random selection event.
Which types of employers typically sponsor counseling psychologists for green cards?
Hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, university counseling centers, and large behavioral health networks are the most consistent PERM sponsors. These organizations have in-house legal or HR teams experienced with DOL recruitment requirements. Private practices and small outpatient clinics rarely sponsor because the administrative and legal costs of PERM are disproportionate to their size.
How can I find Counseling Psychologist jobs that include green card sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search counseling psychology roles filtered by employers with documented green card filing history. Standard job boards don't surface PERM sponsorship status, so you'd otherwise need to research each employer's DOL disclosure data manually. Migrate Mate aggregates that filing history so you can prioritize applications to organizations that have already sponsored similar roles.
Does my foreign psychology degree qualify me for PERM sponsorship in the U.S.?
Foreign degrees are acceptable for PERM purposes if they are equivalent to a U.S. accredited degree in the relevant field. You'll need a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization and, separately, your credentials reviewed by your intended state's psychology licensure board. USCIS and DOL both accept equivalency evaluations, but state boards set their own standards independent of federal immigration requirements.
