Search OFLC Wage Search before applying
Pull prevailing wage data for Lab Assistant roles by ZIP code before your first interview. Employers must pay at least the DOL-certified prevailing wage under PERM, so knowing the local rate helps you spot compliant offers and flag underpaying ones.
Target labs with active PERM filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Lab Assistant openings by employers who have filed PERM applications before. Hiring managers at these organizations already understand the labor certification timeline and are far less likely to drop sponsorship mid-process.
Verify your O*NET job zone classification early
Lab Assistant maps to a specific O*NET occupation code that determines whether your role meets PERM's skilled worker definition. Confirm the job duties in any offer letter align with that profile before your employer submits the PERM application to DOL.
Ask about concurrent I-140 and I-485 filing
If an employment-based visa number is immediately available for your country, you may file the I-140 and I-485 simultaneously, cutting months off your wait. Ask hiring teams whether they work with counsel who handles USCIS concurrent filing for lab staff.
Prepare a role-specific recruitment documentation file
PERM requires your employer to prove no qualified U.S. worker was displaced. Gather your lab certifications, clinical or research experience records, and any specialized training documentation now, so your employer's attorney can build a clean PERM audit file.

Find Lab Assistant JobsLab Assistant Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Lab Assistant role qualify for employment-based green card sponsorship?
Yes. Lab Assistant positions regularly qualify under EB-3 skilled worker sponsorship when the role requires at least two years of training or experience. The employer files a PERM labor certification with DOL, then an I-140 petition with USCIS. Roles at hospitals, universities, and biotech companies are among the most common sponsors for this occupation.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for Lab Assistants?
H-1B requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related specialty field and is subject to an annual lottery cap with no guarantee of selection. PERM-based EB-3 sponsorship has no lottery, targets permanent residency from day one, and covers skilled worker roles that may not meet H-1B's specialty occupation threshold. The trade-off is a longer total timeline, often two to four years or more depending on your country of birth.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor Lab Assistants through PERM?
Academic medical centers, contract research organizations, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and government-affiliated research labs are the most consistent PERM sponsors for Lab Assistant roles. These organizations have in-house or retained immigration counsel familiar with labor certification, making the process more predictable. Use Migrate Mate to identify Lab Assistant openings filtered specifically by green card sponsorship history.
What does the PERM labor certification process involve for my employer?
Your employer must conduct a supervised recruitment campaign, document that no qualified U.S. worker applied, and file an ETA Form 9089 with DOL. The process typically takes six to eighteen months before DOL approval, after which USCIS reviews the I-140 petition. Any job duties or title changes during this window can invalidate the application and force a restart.
Does my country of birth affect how long green card sponsorship takes for a Lab Assistant role?
Yes, significantly. EB-3 priority dates are current for most countries, meaning no additional wait beyond PERM and I-140 processing. However, applicants born in India or China face multi-year backlogs due to per-country annual limits. Migrate Mate's job search surfaces employers with active sponsorship pipelines, helping you assess realistic timelines based on your specific situation before you accept an offer.
