Green Card Marriage And Family Therapist Jobs
Marriage and family therapist roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which requires employers to document recruitment efforts before filing an I-140 petition. Licensed clinical positions at hospitals, community mental health centers, and private group practices regularly sponsor foreign professionals for permanent residency.

Verify your licensure transfers across states
PERM certification is tied to a specific work location, so confirm your foreign clinical training meets the licensing board requirements of the state where your sponsoring employer operates before the labor certification process begins.
Target employers with PERM filing history
Search OFLC disclosure data for marriage and family therapist filings to identify hospital systems, behavioral health networks, and community mental health agencies that have sponsored this exact occupation before, not just healthcare roles broadly.
Distinguish your EB-2 eligibility from EB-3 early
Roles requiring a master's degree in counseling or a related clinical field can support an EB-2 petition. If your employer is filing EB-3, confirm the job description specifies a bachelor's plus licensure so the PERM audit trail holds.
Find green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Search Marriage and Family Therapist roles on Migrate Mate to filter directly for employers with green card sponsorship history, saving you from cold-applying to practices that have never navigated the PERM process.
Align your credential evaluation before the I-140 stage
USCIS evaluates foreign degrees during I-140 adjudication. Get a course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before your employer files, so a degree equivalency question doesn't stall an approved PERM.
Understand supervised hours count toward licensure, not priority dates
Your PERM priority date locks in when DOL certifies the application, not when you complete supervised clinical hours. If licensure requirements extend your timeline, confirm your employer will maintain the petition through any provisional licensing period.
Green Card Marriage And Family Therapist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a marriage and family therapist role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
It depends on how the employer defines the minimum requirements for the position. If the role genuinely requires a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a closely related clinical field, EB-2 applies. If the role requires a bachelor's degree plus licensure, EB-3 is the correct category. The job description used in the PERM filing must reflect actual minimum requirements, not inflated ones.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for therapists?
Green card sponsorship through PERM and an I-140 petition leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary work visa. There is no annual lottery at the EB-3 level for most countries, so your place in line depends on your priority date and country of birth rather than random selection. The process typically takes longer than an H-1B visa approval, but the outcome is lawful permanent residency rather than a status that requires renewal every few years.
What does the PERM process look like for a marriage and family therapist position?
Your employer files an Application for Permanent Employment Certification with DOL, documenting that no qualified U.S. worker was available for the role. For licensed clinical positions, DOL often requires a supervised recruitment period across multiple channels. Once DOL certifies the PERM, your employer files an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. After that, you wait for a current priority date before filing for adjustment of status or an immigrant visa.
How do I find employers who will sponsor a marriage and family therapist for a green card?
Search Migrate Mate to filter marriage and family therapist openings by green card sponsorship history. OFLC disclosure data shows which employers have filed PERM applications for this occupation, which is a more reliable signal than a job posting that simply says 'visa sponsorship available.' Targeting employers with documented PERM filings in the mental health sector significantly narrows your search to genuinely sponsorship-ready organizations.
Can my supervised clinical hours or provisional license create problems during the green card process?
Provisional licensure can complicate matters if your employer's PERM filing specifies full licensure as a minimum requirement. DOL evaluates whether you meet the stated job requirements at the time of filing. If you're completing supervised hours after PERM certification but before I-140 approval, confirm with your employer that the petition language accommodates your licensing timeline and that USCIS will find you eligible when the I-140 is adjudicated.
