Orthopedic Surgeon Green Card Jobs
Orthopedic surgeon roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification, which requires your employer to test the domestic labor market before filing your I-140 petition. Academic medical centers and large hospital systems regularly sponsor foreign-trained orthopedic surgeons, making this one of the more accessible surgical specialties for permanent residency.

Verify your credentials meet PERM requirements
Your foreign medical degree must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency before PERM filing begins. ECFMG certification and completion of a U.S. residency program are typically required, so confirm your documentation is in order before targeting employers.
Target academic medical centers first
Teaching hospitals and academic health systems sponsor orthopedic surgeons at far higher rates than community practices. Many have in-house immigration counsel and established PERM workflows, which means shorter preparation timelines and fewer delays at the labor certification stage.
Search sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter orthopedic surgeon positions by employers with active green card sponsorship history. Seeing a hospital's prior PERM filings lets you target your applications toward organizations already familiar with the process.
Understand how DOL prevailing wage shapes your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location before filing the PERM application. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for orthopedic surgeons in your target market before negotiating your compensation package.
Ask employers about concurrent I-140 and I-485 filing
If a visa number is currently available in your category and country of birth, your employer may be able to file your I-140 and I-485 simultaneously, cutting months off your wait for work authorization. Confirm this option during offer negotiations, not after.
Clarify the EB-2 versus EB-3 classification early
Your sponsoring employer controls whether your PERM is filed under EB-2 or EB-3. For most board-eligible orthopedic surgeons with a U.S. residency, EB-2 is achievable. Establishing the correct classification upfront prevents a costly amendment or re-filing later.

Find Orthopedic Surgeon JobsOrthopedic Surgeon Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Which green card category applies to orthopedic surgeons?
Most orthopedic surgeons qualify under EB-2, which covers advanced-degree professionals, because the role requires a medical degree plus residency training. EB-3 is also available if the sponsoring employer structures the position at that level. Your employer's immigration counsel typically recommends the category based on the job description and your credentials at the time of filing.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
An H-1B is a temporary status with a six-year base limit and annual lottery exposure. Green card sponsorship through PERM leads to permanent residency with no renewal requirement. The PERM process takes longer upfront because it requires a DOL-supervised labor market test, but there is no annual numerical cap at the EB-3 level for most countries, and EB-2 backlogs are modest for candidates born outside high-demand countries.
How long does the PERM and green card process take for surgeons?
PERM labor certification currently takes roughly six to twelve months from the time your employer begins the recruitment process through DOL approval. After that, USCIS adjudicates the I-140 petition, which can take several additional months under standard processing. If your priority date is current, you can file for adjustment of status immediately after I-140 approval, or concurrently if a visa number is available.
How do I find orthopedic surgeon jobs with green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists orthopedic surgeon positions filtered by employers with documented green card sponsorship activity. Searching by role and sponsorship history lets you focus on hospitals and health systems that have already navigated the PERM process, rather than approaching organizations that may be unfamiliar with it or unwilling to take it on.
Can a fellowship or locum tenens position support a PERM filing?
PERM requires a permanent, full-time job offer, so neither a fellowship nor a locum tenens arrangement qualifies on its own. You need a sponsoring employer willing to offer a permanent attending or staff surgeon position. Some candidates complete a fellowship at an institution and then transition into a permanent role at the same organization that triggers the PERM filing.
