Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in Software Development Engineer In Test
Document your SDET specialization before applying
PERM requires your employer to advertise the exact role you'll fill. If your expertise spans test automation frameworks, CI/CD pipeline integration, or performance testing toolchains, get that specificity into your resume now so job descriptions can mirror your credentials accurately.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Search DOL OFLC disclosure data for companies that have filed PERM applications under SOC codes for software quality assurance and testing. Employers already running PERM processes for similar roles move faster and have internal immigration infrastructure in place.
Find green card sponsoring SDET roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Software Development Engineer In Test jobs by employers with verified PERM and I-140 filing history. This surfaces roles where green card sponsorship is already part of the hiring process, not an afterthought you'll need to negotiate.
Confirm your degree aligns with EB-2 or EB-3 eligibility
EB-2 requires a U.S. master's degree or foreign equivalent, or a bachelor's plus five years of progressive experience. EB-3 covers bachelor's degree holders. USCIS evaluates foreign credentials, so get a credential evaluation completed before the I-140 stage.
Negotiate PERM timeline into your offer conversation
PERM labor certification currently runs six to eighteen months before the I-140 petition even begins. Raise the green card sponsorship timeline during the offer stage, not after signing, so both you and your employer align on when the PERM recruitment process will start.
Understand how priority dates affect your green card wait
Once USCIS approves your I-140, your priority date determines when you can file for adjustment of status. Nationals from India and China face multi-year backlogs at the EB-3 level. Check the USCIS Visa Bulletin monthly to track your country's cutoff date.
Green Card Software Development Engineer In Test: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Software Development Engineer In Test roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories apply, depending on your credentials. EB-2 covers candidates with a master's degree or a bachelor's degree plus five years of progressive SDET experience. EB-3 covers professionals with a four-year bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Your employer files under whichever category your qualifications support, and USCIS evaluates foreign degrees against U.S. equivalency standards.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for SDET roles?
H-1B visa is a temporary work visa subject to an annual lottery cap, while PERM-based green card sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no cap at the EB-3 level for most countries. The trade-off is time: PERM labor certification plus I-140 adjudication can take one to two years before you even reach the adjustment of status stage, whereas an approved H-1B lets you start work within months.
What does the PERM process look like for a Software Development Engineer In Test position?
Your employer must complete DOL-supervised recruitment, advertising the SDET role through specified channels and documenting that no qualified U.S. workers applied. Once DOL certifies the PERM application, your employer files an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. After approval, you wait for your priority date to become current before filing Form I-485 to adjust status to lawful permanent resident.
How can I find SDET jobs where employers are already willing to sponsor green cards?
Use Migrate Mate to search Software Development Engineer In Test roles filtered by employers with documented PERM and I-140 filing history. This approach identifies companies that have already run green card sponsorship processes for similar positions, which significantly reduces the negotiation burden and speeds up the hiring conversation around immigration support.
Can I check the prevailing wage requirement for my SDET role before accepting an offer?
Yes. The DOL sets prevailing wage levels for each occupation based on geographic location and job zone. You can look up the wage floor for Software Development Engineer In Test positions using the OFLC Wage Search tool before you negotiate your offer. Your employer must certify in the PERM application that they'll pay at or above the prevailing wage, so knowing that figure in advance puts you in a stronger position.
