Verify your degree aligns with the role
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree field to directly match the Electrical Design Engineer role. A degree in electrical engineering or electronics engineering satisfies this. Degrees in general engineering or physics may trigger a Request for Evidence.
Use O*NET to frame your specialty occupation
The O*NET profile for Electrical Engineers documents the degree requirements and core tasks USCIS adjudicators reference. Reference this profile when explaining why your role qualifies as a specialty occupation in your petition support letter.
Target employers with E-Verify enrollment
Defense contractors and federal subcontractors must use E-Verify, which signals they have HR infrastructure built for work authorization compliance. These employers are more likely to have established H-1B sponsorship workflows than smaller private-sector firms.
Search Migrate Mate for verified H-1B sponsors
Filter Electrical Design Engineer roles on Migrate Mate by employers with LCA filing history in your target state. DOL Labor Condition Application data shows which companies have actively filed for this job title, not just which ones claim to sponsor.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier before accepting an offer
Run your target job title and location through OFLC Wage Search before negotiations. The offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your specific metro area, and accepting a lower offer can delay or derail the LCA certification stage.
Negotiate start date around the cap timeline
If you're cap-subject, the earliest you can start on a new H-1B is October 1. Build that into your offer discussions. Employers unfamiliar with the H-1B cap sometimes offer a June start date expecting immediate authorization, which isn't possible for cap-subject petitions.

Find Electrical Design Engineer JobsElectrical Design Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Design Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the specific job duties, not just the title. Roles focused on PCB design, power distribution systems, or PLC programming consistently qualify because industry practice requires the theoretical knowledge of a degree-level engineer.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Electrical Design Engineers most frequently?
Defense contractors, semiconductor manufacturers, utilities, and industrial automation firms are among the heaviest H-1B filers for this job title. You can verify which specific employers have filed LCAs for Electrical Design Engineer roles in your target region by searching Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by occupation and employer.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I switch Electrical Design Engineer jobs?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as you've been in valid H-1B status for at least 180 days. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA and I-129 petition covering your new role and location.
How does working on-site at a client location affect my H-1B as an Electrical Design Engineer?
If you're placed at a third-party site, such as a manufacturing plant or utility facility, your employer must file a new LCA or amend the existing one if the worksite wasn't covered in the original petition. USCIS scrutinizes third-party placements closely for specialty occupation and employer-employee relationship compliance, so confirm your employer has filed the correct documentation before you begin on-site work.
Does holding a professional engineering license strengthen an H-1B petition for this role?
A P.E. license can support a specialty occupation argument, particularly for roles in power systems or infrastructure where licensure is standard industry practice. USCIS doesn't require a P.E. license, but it can corroborate that the position demands advanced theoretical and applied engineering knowledge at the level a degree provides.
