Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Field Engineer
Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS scrutinizes Field Engineer petitions for specialty occupation compliance. Your degree must directly relate to the specific engineering discipline the job requires. A general business or unrelated science degree typically won't support the petition, even with years of field experience.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Field Engineer roles file under SOC codes like 17-2051 or 17-2141 depending on the discipline. Use the OFLC Wage Search to identify which employers have certified LCAs for your specific code, then target outreach to those companies.
Prioritize E-Verify enrolled employers early
If you're on OPT or cap-gap, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify for your work authorization to remain valid. Confirm enrollment before accepting any Field Engineer offer, not after the paperwork has started.
Find sponsors using verified filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter Field Engineer roles by employers with documented H-1B LCA filing history on Migrate Mate. This lets you skip cold outreach to companies that have never sponsored and focus your applications where sponsorship is already established practice.
Clarify worksite arrangements before petition filing
Field Engineers frequently rotate across client sites or project locations. Each worksite change can trigger a new LCA requirement under DOL rules. Confirm with your employer how multi-site assignments are handled before your I-129 petition is filed.
Request premium processing when start dates are tight
Project-based Field Engineer roles often have firm mobilization deadlines. Premium processing upgrades USCIS adjudication to a 15-business-day window, which reduces the risk of missing a project start date tied to your H-1B approval.
H-1B Visa Field Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Field Engineer jobs qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B purposes?
Yes, most Field Engineer roles qualify because they require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline such as mechanical, electrical, civil, or petroleum engineering. The key is that the job description must require a degree in a directly related field. Roles framed as general technical support or requiring any bachelor's degree may face USCIS scrutiny and requests for evidence.
How do I find Field Engineer employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate surfaces Field Engineer roles filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history, so you're not guessing which companies will sponsor. You can also cross-reference employer names against OFLC disclosure data to see how frequently a company has certified LCAs for engineering roles before you apply.
Can my H-1B petition cover multiple job sites as a Field Engineer?
It can, but each worksite requires its own certified LCA under DOL rules. If your role involves rotating between client sites or project locations in different metropolitan areas, your employer must file a separate LCA for each area and post required notices at each location. Confirm your employer understands this obligation before your petition is submitted.
Does O*NET classify Field Engineer as a qualifying H-1B occupation?
O*NET profiles engineering roles such as Civil Engineers and Mechanical Engineers, which typically map to Field Engineer positions, as Job Zone 4 occupations requiring a bachelor's degree as the standard entry-level education. This classification supports the specialty occupation argument in an H-1B petition, though the actual job duties and degree requirement must still be documented by the employer.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Field Engineer project ends early?
If your employer terminates you before your H-1B period ends, you enter the 60-day grace period during which you can change employers, change status, or prepare to depart. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition and you can begin working once USCIS receives it. Notify your employer immediately if a project cancellation affects your employment status.
