Position Summary
The Chemical Process Engineering Manager is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing plant engineering, process optimization, capital improvement initiatives, and technical problem-solving across manufacturing operations. This position provides leadership for process engineering activities, supports operational excellence initiatives, and drives continuous improvement efforts to improve safety, quality, efficiency, and production capacity.
The Chemical Process Engineering Manager will have one direct report, either an Engineering Supervisor or Plant Engineer, who will oversee maintenance technicians and daily maintenance activities. While this role maintains accountability for overall equipment reliability and plant engineering performance, day-to-day maintenance execution is managed through the Engineering Supervisor/Plant Engineer.
This role requires a strong technical background in Chemical Engineering, with demonstrated expertise in Ion Exchange technology, chemistry, process scale-up, and manufacturing optimization within a chemical or water treatment manufacturing environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Process Engineering & Technical Leadership
- Lead process engineering initiatives to improve manufacturing efficiency, product quality, throughput, and operational reliability.
- Serve as the site technical expert for Ion Exchange chemistry, resin processing, and related chemical manufacturing processes.
- Troubleshoot complex chemistry and process issues impacting production, quality, and customer requirements.
- Lead process scale-up initiatives for new products, process transfers, and production expansion projects.
- Develop and optimize process parameters, standard work, and operating procedures.
- Identify and implement opportunities to increase plant capacity, reduce waste, and improve process flow.
- Partner with Operations, Quality, and R&D teams to support product development, process improvements, and technical investigations.
Engineering & Capital Projects
- Lead planning, justification, and execution of capital projects to support plant growth, modernization, and operational efficiency.
- Manage engineering design, contractor coordination, equipment selection, installation, and commissioning activities.
- Support facility infrastructure improvements, utilities optimization, and equipment upgrades.
- Monitor capital budgets, project timelines, and expenditures to ensure successful project completion.
Maintenance Oversight & Reliability
- Provide strategic oversight for plant maintenance and reliability through the Engineering Supervisor/Plant Engineer.
- Establish reliability improvement initiatives to minimize downtime and improve equipment performance.
- Review preventative and predictive maintenance programs for effectiveness.
- Support root cause analysis of equipment failures and implementation of corrective actions.
- Ensure maintenance systems, spare parts management, and contractor support align with business needs.
Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence
- Lead operational excellence initiatives to improve throughput, efficiency, yield, and overall manufacturing performance.
- Identify process bottlenecks, reduce waste, and implement sustainable solutions to improve safety, quality, cost, and delivery metrics.
- Drive process standardization, KPI development, and data-driven decision making across engineering and operations.
- Evaluate and implement automation, process improvements, and technology upgrades to support plant growth and scalability.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and lead a strong safety culture throughout engineering and operations.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and company safety/environmental standards.
- Support Process Safety Management initiatives where applicable.
- Participate in incident investigations, corrective actions, and risk reduction efforts.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Process Engineering Manager
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
USCIS evaluates whether your degree field directly relates to process engineering management. A mechanical or chemical engineering degree strengthens your petition. A general business degree paired with unrelated experience can trigger an RFE, so gather transcripts and course descriptions early.
Filter employers by LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Search Process Engineering Manager roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation. That history signals an established H-1B sponsorship infrastructure, reducing the risk of a first-time employer mishandling your petition timeline.
Target cap-exempt employers to skip the lottery
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government research organizations are cap-exempt. A Process Engineering Manager role at a university manufacturing center or federally funded lab lets you file outside the April lottery window and start sooner.
Verify your prevailing wage tier before negotiating salary
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level II or III prevailing wage for your SOC code and the employer's metro area. Your offered salary must meet or exceed that threshold, and knowing the floor before negotiating prevents offers that DOL won't certify.
Request premium processing for time-sensitive start dates
USCIS offers premium processing on I-129 petitions, with a 15-business-day adjudication window. If your offer letter has a hard start date tied to a plant launch or production ramp, ask your employer to elect premium processing before filing to avoid schedule conflicts.
Document cross-functional scope to satisfy specialty occupation
Process Engineering Managers who oversee both engineering and operations staff face higher RFE risk if the job description reads as general management. Your employer's support letter should detail the engineering-specific duties, required technical degree, and specialized knowledge applied daily.
H-1B Visa Process Engineering Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Process Engineering Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering or a directly related field. USCIS looks at whether the role applies theoretical and practical engineering knowledge. If your employer's job description emphasizes general supervisory duties over technical engineering work, the petition is more likely to receive an RFE questioning specialty occupation status. A well-drafted job description focused on applied engineering methodology strengthens the case significantly.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for process engineering roles?
Migrate Mate filters Process Engineering Manager listings by employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history through the DOL. That history is public record and indicates the employer has navigated the sponsorship process before, making them far more likely to successfully file your petition than a company attempting its first H-1B sponsorship.
Can my employer file my H-1B petition after I'm already working in a different status?
Yes. If you're on OPT, a TN visa, or another valid nonimmigrant status, your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf during the April registration window. If selected and approved, you can change status without leaving the U.S. Your current work authorization must remain valid through October 1, the H-1B start date, to maintain continuous employment.
What happens to my H-1B if my employer transfers me to a different plant or facility?
A worksite change can require an amended H-1B petition if the new location is in a different metropolitan statistical area than the one covered by your original Labor Condition Application. Your employer must file a new LCA covering the new location's prevailing wage before or promptly after the move. Short-term placements under certain DOL guidelines may allow exceptions, but permanent transfers require the amended filing.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect Process Engineering Manager hiring?
Before filing your H-1B petition, your employer must certify through the DOL that your offered salary meets the prevailing wage for your occupation code and work location. For Process Engineering Managers, prevailing wages vary significantly by metro area and experience level. You can look up applicable wage levels using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer to confirm the salary your employer proposes is certifiable.
