Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Welding Engineer
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to welding engineering work. A materials science, mechanical engineering, or metallurgy degree typically qualifies. A general engineering technology degree may trigger a Request for Evidence if the connection isn't explicit.
Target industries with consistent H-1B filing history
Aerospace, oil and gas pipeline construction, automotive manufacturing, and shipbuilding have the deepest H-1B filing records for Welding Engineer roles. Search Migrate Mate by occupation to filter employers with verified LCA filing history in your target industry.
Check the prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your specific job zone and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level I through Level IV wages for Welding Engineers before you sign anything, not after.
Confirm the employer files cap-subject petitions
Some welding roles sit inside universities or government research labs, which are cap-exempt. If you need a cap-subject H-1B, confirm the employer has filed petitions through the annual lottery. Cap-exempt employers file outside the lottery under different USCIS rules.
Review your O*NET profile before the petition
The O*NET occupation profile for Welding Engineers defines the core tasks, required knowledge, and degree fields USCIS references during specialty occupation adjudication. Your resume and the employer's job description should align with those O*NET-defined requirements before the I-129 is filed.
Negotiate filing timeline around the H-1B cap
USCIS opens H-1B registration in March for an October 1 start date. If you're selected, your employer must file the I-129 petition within the designated window. Structure your job offer and start date discussions with this filing calendar in mind.

Find Welding Engineer JobsWelding Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Welding Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies Welding Engineer as a specialty occupation because the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as mechanical engineering, materials science, or metallurgical engineering. Employers must document that the specific position requires this level of theoretical and practical knowledge, not just general engineering experience.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for Welding Engineers most often?
Aerospace and defense contractors, oil and gas pipeline companies, automotive manufacturers, shipbuilders, and heavy equipment fabricators have the strongest H-1B filing histories for Welding Engineer roles. Nuclear energy and pressure vessel manufacturers also file regularly. You can filter by industry and verify LCA filing history for specific employers on Migrate Mate.
Can a Welding Engineer switch employers mid-H-1B without losing status?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, as long as your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days and the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. Your previous approval remains valid during adjudication.
What happens if my Welding Engineer role involves multiple work sites?
DOL requires a separate Labor Condition Application for each physical worksite where you'll work more than 30 days in a rolling year. For Welding Engineers who travel between manufacturing plants or construction sites, the employer must file amended LCAs or an itinerary-based petition to stay compliant with DOL worksite rules.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Welding Engineer H-1B petitions?
Your employer must pay you at least the DOL prevailing wage for Welding Engineers in your specific work location and job level, determined through the OFLC Wage Search. Wages vary significantly by geography and experience level. Employers who underpay relative to the certified LCA wage risk DOL audits, back-pay liability, and potential debarment from future sponsorship.
