Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Facilities Engineer
Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree and the facilities engineering position. A degree in mechanical or industrial engineering typically aligns, but a general business degree won't support the specialty occupation requirement without significant coursework in engineering.
Search LCA filings by SOC code
Facilities Engineer roles file under SOC 17-2199 in the DOL system. Filter OFLC disclosure data by that code to find employers who have actively sponsored this title, not just companies with a general H-1B history.
Use Migrate Mate to target verified sponsors
Pull up Facilities Engineer listings on Migrate Mate to see which employers have verified H-1B LCA filing history for this exact role. That filters out companies that sponsor selectively or only for software positions.
Confirm prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC 17-2199 in your target metro before any salary conversation. Your offered wage must meet at least Level I for the LCA to certify, and many facilities roles fall at Level II or III in high-cost markets.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status early
Universities, teaching hospitals, and nonprofit research institutions are cap-exempt, meaning you can start on H-1B any time of year without lottery risk. Facilities engineering roles at these employers are a viable path if you've lost the lottery or need to avoid the April registration window.
Document professional engineer licensure carefully
If the role requires a PE license, confirm with the employer whether USCIS will use the license as additional evidence of specialty occupation. State-issued PE credentials can strengthen the petition, but they don't substitute for the bachelor's degree requirement in the underlying filing.
H-1B Visa Facilities Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Facilities Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer's job description requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering field such as mechanical, civil, electrical, or industrial engineering. Roles that accept any four-year degree regardless of field are harder to defend as specialty occupations. The O*NET profile for this SOC code supports the degree requirement, which helps when USCIS reviews the petition.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most consistently for Facilities Engineers?
Universities, hospital systems, large commercial real estate operators, semiconductor manufacturers, and pharmaceutical companies file H-1B LCAs for Facilities Engineers at higher volumes than most other sectors. These employers tend to have in-house HR teams familiar with the process and ongoing facilities headcount needs. You can browse employers with active filing history for this title on Migrate Mate.
What happens to my H-1B status if my facilities role is reclassified or my duties change significantly?
If your employer changes your job duties substantially, such as shifting you from hands-on engineering to a predominantly administrative facilities management role, USCIS may view that as a material change requiring an amended H-1B petition. Your employer should file the amendment before the change takes effect. Failing to do so creates a period of unauthorized employment even if you remain with the same company.
Can a staffing agency sponsor an H-1B visa for a Facilities Engineer placed at a client site?
Yes, but the staffing agency is the petitioning employer of record and bears the LCA wage obligation. USCIS scrutinizes third-party placement petitions closely for specialty occupation and employer-employee relationship evidence. The agency must demonstrate it controls the terms and conditions of your work, and the end client's job requirements must independently satisfy the specialty occupation standard.
How does a PE license affect my H-1B petition as a Facilities Engineer?
A Professional Engineer license issued by a U.S. state board strengthens your petition as corroborating evidence that the role requires advanced specialized knowledge. USCIS doesn't treat it as a substitute for the bachelor's degree requirement, but adjudicators do weigh it when evaluating whether the position rises to specialty occupation level. Include your PE certificate and the state board's requirements in the supporting documentation.
