Align your credentials to SOC 17-3023
Electrical Engineering Technicians fall under SOC code 17-3023. Pull the O*NET profile for this code to confirm your degree field and job duties match what USCIS expects when evaluating specialty occupation status for your petition.
Check prevailing wages before accepting offers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage for SOC 17-3023 in your target metro. Your offered salary must meet at least Level I, and underpayment is a common LCA compliance failure that can derail a petition.
Target employers with active LCA filing histories
Defense contractors, semiconductor fabs, and utilities file H-1B petitions for technician roles far more consistently than small engineering firms. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified LCA filing history specifically for electrical and electronics technician positions.
Document hands-on lab and testing experience clearly
USCIS scrutinizes technician roles more than pure engineering roles because some technician jobs don't require a bachelor's degree. Your resume and the employer's support letter must connect your degree-level knowledge directly to the technical complexity of the role.
Confirm your employer is E-Verify enrolled before filing
If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT or STEM OPT, your current employer must be enrolled in E-Verify for your work authorization to remain valid. Verify enrollment status before your cap-gap window opens to avoid a gap in authorized employment.
File for premium processing if your start date is fixed
USCIS standard H-1B adjudication can run several months. If your employer has a firm project start date or a government contract milestone tied to your onboarding, request premium processing through USCIS to receive a decision within 15 business days.
H-1B Visa Electrical Engineering Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Engineering Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the position is defined. USCIS requires that the specific role normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Technician roles that involve circuit design, systems testing, or instrumentation calibration requiring degree-level knowledge generally qualify, while roles that can be performed with an associate degree or vocational training face higher scrutiny and a greater risk of an RFE.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Electrical Engineering Technicians?
Defense contractors, semiconductor manufacturers, electric utilities, and aerospace firms have the strongest H-1B filing histories for this occupation. These employers regularly file LCAs under SOC 17-3023 because their project environments require degree-qualified technicians for compliance and technical complexity reasons. You can filter by industry and employer on Migrate Mate to see which companies have active filing histories for this role.
Can my employer file an H-1B for me if I currently hold an associate degree and have extensive work experience?
USCIS allows a combination of education and experience to satisfy the bachelor's degree equivalent requirement. Three years of specialized work experience can substitute for one year of college-level education, meaning 12 years of directly relevant experience can approximate a four-year degree. Your employer's petition must document this equivalency carefully, and an independent evaluation from a credentials assessment organization strengthens the case.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer loses a defense contract and my position is eliminated?
You enter a 60-day grace period from the date your employment ends, during which you can find a new sponsoring employer and have them file an H-1B transfer petition. The new employer can file a change of employer petition while you remain in the U.S. If the petition is filed before your grace period expires, you're generally authorized to continue working for the new employer while USCIS adjudicates.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement work for Electrical Engineering Technician roles across different regions?
The DOL sets four wage levels for each SOC code in each metropolitan area, and your LCA must certify that your offered wage meets at least the Level I prevailing wage for your work location. Wages for SOC 17-3023 vary significantly by metro, so a salary that satisfies prevailing wage in a lower-cost region may fall short in San Jose or Boston. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the applicable level for each location before evaluating an offer.
