Map your degree to SOC codes
USCIS evaluates specialty occupation by matching your degree field to the role's SOC code. For QA Test Engineers, the relevant code is 15-1253. Confirm your transcript reflects a directly related field before applying to roles with strict degree requirements.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Look up the prevailing wage for your target SOC code and metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before you receive an offer. Your employer must certify at least that wage level on the LCA, so knowing it prevents lowball offers that could stall the filing.
Target employers enrolled in E-Verify
STEM OPT extensions require E-Verify enrollment from your employer. Filtering for E-Verify employers during your job search reduces the risk of authorization gaps between OPT expiration and H-1B cap-gap coverage. Use Migrate Mate to search employers with verified H-1B filing history for QA roles.
Clarify testing methodology in your petition documents
USCIS occasionally issues RFEs for QA roles questioning whether the position truly requires a bachelor's degree. Have your employer document specific testing frameworks, automation tools, and technical complexity in the job description to preempt specialty occupation challenges.
Register during the cap season before your OPT expires
The H-1B cap registration window opens in March each year. If your OPT expires before October 1, confirm your employer files within the cap-gap window so your work authorization continues uninterrupted while USCIS adjudicates the petition.
Request the LCA before signing an offer
Ask your prospective employer to share the certified LCA details, including wage level and worksite location, before you finalize your acceptance. Mismatches between the LCA worksite and your actual remote or hybrid location can create compliance issues for both you and your employer.
H-1B Visa QA Test Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a QA Test Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, QA Test Engineer positions generally qualify when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a directly related field. Roles that accept any degree or lack technical complexity may face RFEs from USCIS. A detailed job description documenting automation tools, testing frameworks, and system architecture requirements strengthens the specialty occupation argument.
Which employers actively sponsor H-1B visas for QA Test Engineers?
Technology companies, software consultancies, financial services firms, and healthcare IT organizations are among the most consistent H-1B filers for QA and software testing roles. Migrate Mate lets you search employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history specifically for QA Test Engineer positions, so you can prioritize companies with a demonstrated record of sponsoring this role type.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect QA Test Engineer H-1B filings?
Your employer must certify on the LCA that your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and worksite location. QA Test Engineer wages are benchmarked under SOC 15-1253. If your employer offers below the certified wage level, USCIS can deny the petition. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the applicable wage tier before accepting an offer.
What happens to my H-1B status if I change employers mid-petition?
You can change employers through H-1B portability under AC21 if your original petition has been pending for at least 180 days and the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For QA Test Engineers, a new employer in software testing or quality assurance typically satisfies the similarity requirement. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before you start the new role.
Can I work remotely on an H-1B as a QA Test Engineer?
Remote work on an H-1B requires a certified LCA that lists every worksite where you perform services. If you work remotely from a different location than the one on your certified LCA, your employer must file an amended LCA and potentially an amended H-1B petition. Short-term remote work within commuting distance of the original worksite may qualify for short-term placement rules, but permanent remote arrangements require updated filings.
